Indian Hockey Disappointing Performance: What Indian Hockey is Failing in Last Few Tournaments??

The Indian Hockey is going through rough phase at the moment where both Men’s and Women’s Team are Going through rough phase, where Indian Men’s Hockey had a rough FIH Pro League at the moment.

India lost six matches in the row with the last one came against Australia where they lost game by 2-3, and there are couple of reasons behind India’s debacle performance.

1. Lack of Attacking Instinct where they have failed to capture the moments in the past.

2.  It was 400th  game for Manpreet Singh, but he failed to inspire the entire team when it mattered the most.

3. The Team’s Inability to score goals especially in penalty corner make things difficult for them where they have failed to capitalize,  those moments when it mattered the most.

4. India’s Performance (Men’s Hockey Team) have displayed back to back performances, where they have won Bronze Medal on Tokyo 2020, and Paris  Olympics 2024 respectively.

5. From a High of Consecutive medals at the Olympics, to a bagel in the European Leg of the FIH Pro the performance of Indian Hockey team has been a dramatic fall.

6. The sixth Consecutive, loses suggest a tough fight- for the Indians But it also reflect a worrying trend- Conceding last minute goals, an off shot for shots when it comes to defensive  lapses under pressure.

7. The most matches they have played in last few years, where they failed to score in most matches where opposition teams have scored in most games.

8. Current Head Coach Craig Fulton and Old Coach Graham Reid have already raised this concern where Indian team is conceding most goals in last moments of the game.

9. They need to experiment their formation and make sure they deliver when it mattered the most in important games.

10. They have bungled a lot when it comes to experimenting a lot for Senior Players spot in FIH Pro League.

11. Indian team fitness have substantially improved but they still needs to do wonders, when it comes to maintaining the same consistency in the crunch phase of the game.

12. India have certainly dropped consistency in last few moments they need to buckle up as their mistakes have been glary and Coach Craig Fulton have expressed that “We had some good moments, But didn’t really finish what we started. We are learning, but we are also changing a few things, trying different tactics, But’s that’s no excuse”

13. When we talk about India’s new tactics, where they have relied on extended periods for Man- to- Man Markings, where opponents are cash in stuff brilliantly and identifying the gaps which should not be an easy thing to find out.

14. This lackluster approach have led them lose back to back games against Netherlands and Argentina, In defence Amit Rohidas and Midfielder Sumit haven’t applied defensive instinct in their execution.

15. The Goalkeepers including the likes of Suraj Karkera and Kishan Bahadur to offend for themselves, and gifted goals to oppositions where they win most games clearly.

16. Last week India came into the twin contests, against Australia where they lost few close games.

17. On Saturday with 2-1 lead, India clearly allowed Australia to go off the hook where they conceded two goals in last five minutes.

18. The winning goal came from Australian Tom Craig in 43 seconds left in the game.

19. In Less than 24 hours, they were back on the field where they look jaded and conceded early goals before they could even think about staging a comeback.

20. They flattened to deceive opponents to a 2-3 loss record.

21. With a week Break Indian Men’s Hockey team would be looking to replicate the best performance and find themselves in good head space to win upcoming games in FIH Pro League.

22. Their next encounter comes against Belgium where they need to reflect attacking instinct of Hockey when it mattered the most.

23. Indian team is still experimenting considering these games are important and the confidence derived in this marquee events will help them to build next year, It is understandable that Fulton is still in experimenting zone, and he needs all seasoned players to make comeback in the marquee event.

Let’s Decode India’s Performances to be shared in the below format:

Indian Hockey Team, needs formation findings, attack, defense and all round game have been upto the mark, and they need to make changes in their overall aspect, fitness and overall development where they can emerge winner of this contest.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q-1: Why Indian Hockey is struggling at the moment?

Answer: India’s recent FIH Pro League campaign has been characterized by close defeats, as the team has given up late goals against elite teams like Australia, Argentina, and the Netherlands. India has lost all six of its recent games after giving up winners in the final 13 minutes, twice in the final three minutes and once with only 43 seconds remaining. Despite the fact that the squad is among the fittest in the world, this pattern reveals persistent problem: defensive errors and decline in energy during the last quarter.

2. How Coach Fulton Experimentation is Working for India?

Answer:

Given the high stakes and the caliber of the opposition—Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, and Argentina—coach Craig Fulton has underlined the value of using seasoned players during this pivotal European leg. Fulton has mostly depended on seasoned players to lead the team through this difficult time, even if the Indian team is still striving to find the best combinations and tactical formations.

3. What are the key areas where Indian Men’s Hockey Team needs to improve to do wonders in the Upcoming Marquee Events?

Answer:

India’s recent results indicate that although their offensive and defensive strategies have improved, they still need to focus on few crucial areas in order to succeed consistently.

Game management in crucial situations: To prevent giving up late goals, which has been recurrent problem in their previous defeats, the team must remain composed and focused in the closing quarters.

Tactical Flexibility: India must make sure that tactical adjustments, such as man-to-man marking, do not jeopardize defensive solidity when experimenting with various formations, particularly when facing elite opponents.

By addressing these aspects—formation clarity, tactical discipline, fitness, and all-round development—India can convert narrow defeats into wins and position themselves as strong contenders for the FIH Pro League title and other marquee events

The Journey won’t be easy for Indian Team but the kind of players they have in their arsenal they can certainly do wonders when it mattered the most.

The likes of Experience players including – Manpreet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Lalit Kumar Upadhyay and can certainly guide these youngsters about their game whenever they are going in distinct directions where the goals are not aligned perfectly with the vision existing in place.

India certainly needs to play certain brand of hockey which reflect their own symbolism and the moment they would be able to do that it would be hard for any team to defeat them.
