ICC CWC 2023: Australia win Trans Tasman battle against New Zealand by 5 runs
Pat Cummins‘ Australia defeated New Zealand by just 5 runs in match number 27 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 league stage. It was without a doubt one of the closest encounters we have ever witnessed in the history of Cricket world cups.
The 2015 CWC finalists played out a heart throbbing contest at the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala and none of the fans might have gone back home with sadness on their faces. And that was because all of them watched full 100 overs of ODI cricket.

Tom Latham elected to bowl first in what was a batting friendly pitch where the Aussies dominated right from the start. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis was dropped today to make way for Travis Head, who made his Cricket World cup debut today.
Head had his left hand broken last month when Australia toured to South Africa but it didn’t seem like the left-handed batter was away from Cricket all this time. He smacked the fastest half-century in World cup 2023 before converting it into a 59 ball 100.
His partner David Warner continued his fine form and 81 off 65 but departed after giving away a simple catch to Glenn Phillips after stitching a 175-run partnership with Head. 25 runs later Travis Head was also removed by Phillips.
The Batting all-rounder also took the wicket of Steve Smith for 18 with Mitchell Marsh getting out for 36 by Mitchell Santner. Marnus Labuschagne also got out for 18 and it was Glenn Maxwell and Wicket keeper batsman Josh Inglis who steadied the ship.
Maxwell scored 41 while Inglis smashed 38 and Pat Cummins played a blitz knock of 37 runs towarsd the end of 1st innings. New Zealand had a target of 388 to chase and their openers, Devon Conway and Will Young made a partnership of 61 before Conway left the crease for 28.
Young departed soon as well for 32 but No.3 and 4 Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell made a partnership of 96 with the former scoring a Century and Mitchell amassing 54. Tom Latham remained out of form today as well scoring 21 while Glenn Phillips struck only 12 runs.

Just when it seemed that the fight is over, Jimmy Neesham produed a fightback with a vital 58 off 39 but his innings ended with an unfortunate run out. Mitchell Santner, Trent Boult and Matt Henry tried to fight back but Mitchell starc’s final over ensured a 5-run win for Australia.
With that, the Aussies won their 4th match of the Cricket World cup 2023 with 8 points only behind New Zealand due to a poor net run rate. Australia’s next match will be another classic against England on November 4 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
