“Gautam Gambhir not important”, India’s new head coach makes bold statement

The ex-Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor Gautam Gambhir who was appointed as the head coach of India has made a bold statement ahead of the IND vs SL series. During a recent press conference, he said “Gautam Gambhir is not important”. Gambhir also highlighted that taking over an incredibly successful side has some big responsibilities to fill.

The team has set standards high with recent achievements as T20 World Champions of the year, and runners-up in both the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. Gambhir, who is not known to mince his words, during a recent interaction with the media, was quite clear that he does not believe in individual achievements and lays a lot of stress on the team’s success.

“I am taking over a very, very successful team,” Gambhir remarked. “T20 World champions, runner-up in World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup. There are shoes to fill, but this is a champions’ team.”

Before the team was to leave for Sri Lanka, Gambhir for instance came out and re-affirmed his desire to create a solid and united team. He stated ‘‘For me, a happy dressing room is a winning dressing room’’.

Acknowledging the legacy of his predecessors, Gambhir expressed humility in following in the footsteps of cricketing legends like Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri. “I have big shoes to fill,” he admitted, signaling his respect for the coaches who came before him.

Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate will be part of Gambhir’s coaching team which he formed after his departure from Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir had a word to say about how professional they are and how he regards them to be potential future coaches for the Indian team.

“I have worked closely with Abhishek and Ryan in the last two months at IPL with KKR, both are absolute professionals and hopefully will have a successful stint with the Indian team as coaches.”

In the future, Gambhir is assured that the model of successful communications with a team’s leading players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will help cope with the difficulties of the next tournaments including the Champions Trophy and the series with Australia.

“I shared a great relationship with Virat Kohli. He is a world-class batter, and together, we aim to make 140 crore people proud,” said Gambhir.

Gautam Gambhir made Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) the IPL champion two times under his captaincy in 2012 and 2014. He once again made KKR the IPL champion in 2024 but this time as a mentor. Winning the IPL trophy 3 times for KKR proved his leadership skills with the team. Hence, Indian cricket fans are ecstatic about the Gambhir becoming head coach.
