Chekrovolu Swuro Biography: Chekrovolu Swuro is a well-known archer from Indian. Chekrovolu has represented India in archery events at the Asian Games in 2002 and the Asian Games in 2006 held at South Korea and Qatar. The archer was also a member of the team who won a silver medal at the World Archery Championship in 2011 held at Turin in Italy. With this victory, she got qualified for the Summer Olympics 2012 in both team archery & women’s Individual.

EARLY LIFE

Chekrovolu Swuro is known to be the poster girl for Indian archery. Chekrovolu was the first Naga woman to go to the Olympics & also the second woman from the state to represent India. Indian football player, Dr. Talirmen Ao was the first Olympian from the North-Eastern state.

Chekrovolu Swuro made her international circuit debut in 1999 at the Asian Grand Prix in Bangkok. Swuro’s first outing turned to be a dream debut. Unfortunately, the team missed the gold medal & finished the event with a silver medal.

PERSONAL LIFE

Chekrovolu Swuro was born on 21 November 1982 in Dzulhami village, Phek district, Nagaland, India. Vesuzolu S. Vadeo, her elder sister was also a national archer.

In 1994, the 13-year-old Chekrovolu Swuro tried her hands on one of the oldest sport in the world- Archery. And by 2011, the young Swuro emerged into an exceptional women Naga archer. Her archery journey began when the little archer aspired to see her name printed in the newspapers just like her elder sister. The Tata Archery Academy in Jharkhand noticed her great talent as an archer and absorbed her when she was 20 years old.

Chekrovolu Swuro belongs to the Chakhesang tribe. Chekrovolu tribe is considered one of the more backward tribes in Nagaland. Chekrovolu hopes her performances help her tribe to increase its status in Nagaland. Chekrovolu’s family had to go through a lot of hardships to reach her. They didn’t have any equipment or facility. But her talent gave them a hope that things would get better someday. Today, Naga people know her & talk about her. She always wanted to achieve an Olympic medal to inspire her fellow Naga people.

The Nagaland archer now focuses on building her younger brother into an outstanding archer. Today, Chekrovolu is serving as the Assistant Sub-Inspector in the Nagaland Police.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

The Nagaland based archer made headlines when the Indian archery team stood on the podium holding a silver medal in the 2011 Archery World Cup held at Turin, Italy. Following year, Chekrovolu successfully made for the London Summer Olympics in both women’s individual and team archery disciplines.

Earlier, Chekrovolu Swuro had put the Indian jersey at the Asian Games in 2002 and the Asian Games 2006 in Busan, South Korea and Doha, Qatar.

The Arjuna winner awardee has also represented her country in almost all the international archery competitions in various parts of the world.
