Sapna Punia Biography: Sapna Punia is a female race walker hailing from Jaipur, Rajasthan. She is known for representing India at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. She has a national record in the 20 km walk which she achieved at the 2015 National Games with a time of 1:40:35.70.

Sapna was born on 2nd January, 1988 in the city of Jaipur. She studied in a government school but then took admission in a Private school after she started competing in sports at the State level.

Sapna married at the age of just 17 and soon gave birth to her child at the age of 18. Along with that Sapna continued her studies and after completing her studies she got a job in Rajasthan Police as a constable in the year 2008.

She has a small family consisting of her husband and her son who is 12-years-old and herself. Sapna gives a lot of credit behind her success today as she got support from everyone mainly coming from her husband.

It was her husband Anil Poonia who insisted her to take sports as it would help her get fast promotions at the job. Sapna started training at the police station campus and her intense training gave her what she deserved. Within 6-7 months of training, Sapna won a gold medal at the All India Level in Race walking event. Sapna was then promoted to the post of Head Constable . It was her husband and the additional Senior Police Ram Singh Shekhawat, who helped her in training. Sapna who was an expertise in 10 km race walking was introduced to the 20 km race walking category during the National games. Sapna won the National games and that was her qualification for the Asian Championships in Japan. Sapna’s timing of one hour, 35 minutes, 36 seconds in finishing fourth in the women’s 20km walk at the Asian Race walking Championships in Japan  was enough after the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) lowered the qualification marks. After that she went to Poland one month prior to the Rio Olympics for training.  She then competed in the 20 km walk at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil but could not finish. Sapna has participated in various International Games meet.
