Bhavna married the Indian Air Force fighter pilot and Kargil War Hero Group Captain Shreepad Tokekar.  Born in Madhya Pradesh Bhavna’s husband motivated her to pursue her ambitions as he saw her inclination in weightlifting. She started taking part in weightlifting activities at the age of 41 and drew motivation through the internet, especially YouTube videos. A full time home- maker and a mother of two teenagers always got support from her husband and her children who in turn gave her the personal time for training. She started her weight training by following some of the online fitness coaches and other websites. Marrying a pilot allows her to stay in various parts of the country.  Bhavana was motivated by IAF bodybuilders to try weightlifting. She says she initially had inhibitions about looking overtly muscular and masculine, but some online research helped put these misconceptions aside.

Bhavna came across World Powerlifting Congress (WPC) Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh state head Mohammed Azmat on the app and got inspiration from him. On February 10 when Bhavna finally approached Mohammed Azmat if she could represent team India in the international power lifting event. She was asked to come to Bengaluru and give trials. She learnt about the techniques, rules and regulations of powerlifting and got selected for the Masters2 category (40-45 age group). Bhavna recalled that she got guidance from Mohammed Azmat online as well. Bhavana is also a long-distance runner (8-10km) and has taken part in a few marathon events. The gold medalist regularly posts videos of herself weight-training on Instagram, leaving her followers awestruck at her strength, and inspiring many to pursue their fitness journeys.

On July 14, 2019, Bhavna won 4 Gold medals at the Open Asian Powerlifting Championships organised by the World Powerlifting Congress (WPC), in Chelyabinsk, Russia. She took part in the ‘Under 67.5 Masters 2’ category (45-50 age group), and this was her first-ever competition. In her first competition ever, Bhavna Tokekar competed in the U67.5 Masters2 Category and won the gold in full powerlifting raw and bench. Her best lifts were Squat – 85kg, Bench – 62.5kg and Deadlifts – 120kg.
