Why it will not be easy for Jadeja “Jersey no 8” to fill shoes of MS Dhoni “Jersey no 7” as the leader of CSK?

Ravindra Jadeja

Yesterday all CSK fans were in complete shock after their legendary skipper MS Dhoni stepped down from his leadership role and passed on the baton to Ravindra Jadeja who is in the prime form but here in this article we will analyse why it won’t be easy for Jadeja to fill heavy boots of MS Dhoni as the leader of Yellow army?

MS Dhoni is possibly the greatest leader that the game has ever produced as he is the only Indian captain to win all ICC trophies- 20 over world cup in 2007, 50 over world cup in 2011 and Champions Trophy in 2013 respectively.

Along with this he has guided CSK towards four IPL title and with the latest trophy coming in last edition despite having poor form with the willow speaks a volume about the leader he has been in this great game of cricket.

Jadeja of late has developed tremendous form with both willow and ball and irrespective of format his development as player has been top notch.

MS Dhoni is a kind of player who knows when it is the right time for him to quit his leadership role whether it is 2014 and 2017 passing on the captaincy of India in Test cricket and limited over format respectively to Virat Kohli. The latest bandwagon to support this statement is passing the captaincy to Jadeja ahead of 2022 IPL season.

If you set aside the legacy of MS Dhoni as leader his form with the willow is questionable so in hindsight he was playing in the squad as captain not as player.

He scored 114 runs in 16 matches at an average of 16.28 with a strike rate of 106.54 and these numbers are something which you clearly don’t identify with MSD.

Ravindra Jadeja’s handling captaincy can be questionable as the ace all-rounder has only captained once in ICC under 19 world cup and also he is not someone looked up by BCCI over the years in the leadership role.

If Jadeja successfully led CSK towards another IPL title critics would praise smooth transition from Jersey no 7 to Jersey no 8.

Let’s stress more on how the leadership role of CSK in the ongoing season will be panned out as Dhoni would be playing as wicketkeeper-batsman and considering his form with the willow and retirment from International cricket in 2020 would not contribute much as player.

As Jadeja mentioned in his recent interview after becoming the leader of CSK that he is elated with the decision as the leader of CSK and for any guidance he will walk up to Dhoni.

However the critics and the fans who understand this game of cricket knows this deep down MS Dhoni role in the ongoing season will be to act as mentor and develop Jadeja as the leader for next generation and we would not be surprised if this IPL is his last one.

You might see him in the coaching stint after 2022 edition with CSK but with Dhoni you never know what his next move will be if he decides to play his last IPL as player post 2022 edition of cash-rich league.
