Why does Gautam Gambhir always criticize Virat Kohli?

We all know Gautam Gambhir remains in the news for his brutally honest statements. From cricket to talk shows to politics the Delhi lad loves to play on the front foot. He may not be naturally gifted like Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli, but his commitment and obsession for winning was unparalleled.

But apart from his glorious career, Gambhir has triggered some massive controversies out of Pandora box and one of them was his famous fight with Virat Kohli during IPL season 6.

Since then Gautam Gambhir has left no stones unturned in mocking Virat Kohli as a player and captain. He questioned Kohli’s prowess as a captain, underrated Kohli’s captaincy and even touted Kohli contemporaries like Smith, Joe Root better than him.

Actual reason behind Kohli and Gambhir spat

We all know both Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli hail from Delhi and played first-class cricket together. During the initial days, Virat Kohli was the apple of Gambhir eyes, he mentored Kohli under his tenure as India vice-captain.

If rumours are to be believed, he even asked Kohli to open few matches alongside him. He even rejected his man of the match award and handed the award to Virat Kohli, who also smashed his maiden ODI hundred in the match.

The Indian dressing room was in good space, but the situation became sour when India lost miserably to Australia in 2012. Gambhir said some outspoken words against MS Dhoni that led to disagreement on different topics.

A few months later Gambhir was removed from vice-captaincy and Virat Kohli was appointed as new India vice-captain. Gambhir couldn’t digest the fact and adding salt to the injury he was dropped from ODI and tests in 2013.

Different news channels and newspapers showcased MS Dhoni for using his powers to remove Gambhir from the squad. Some believed Kohli chosen as vice-captain over Gambhir wounded Gambhir. Everyone knew Gambhir was a better cricket brain than Kohli those days and he even proved his mettle by winning the IPL title for KKR in 2012.

The questioned were again raised of handing over the vice-captaincy to Gambhir. In 2013, Virat used abusive language against KKR bowlers during the match, which got Gambhir fuming and he got involved in a verbal spat with Kohli. The spat cemented Kohli and Gambhir rivalry forever. After Dhoni retirement from test cricket, Kohli continued the legacy of giving chances to youngsters completely sidelining Gambhir, who was scoring tons of runs in domestic circuit.

Although he was called back for the test match against New Zealand in 2016, but featured only in 1 test match.

Although the veteran has cleared he has no personal issues with him, but it seems the Delhi lad is still upset with Kohli attitude and arrogance on and off the field.
