Watch: How SubAir drainage system will save RCB vs CSK in IPL 2024

The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is likely to go ahead uninterrupted, even if rain decides to play spoilsport. This assurance comes courtesy of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium’s SubAir drainage system. The SubAir drainage system is set to save the day for RCB vs CSK clash.

Why the Hype Around RCB vs CSK?

This match is a do-or-die situation for both teams. Victory is crucial for them to secure a coveted spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs. With the threat of rain looming over the match day, fans were understandably worried. However, the SubAir system emerges as a hero, promising a full and uninterrupted cricketing experience.

The SubAir drainage system, installed between 2016 and 2017, is a game-changer for the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. It’s a testament to the foresight of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) that undertook this significant revamp.

How Does SubAir drainage system work?

The secret lies in the foundation. Unlike traditional grounds that use red soil, the SubAir system relies on sand as the primary base. This seemingly simple change makes a world of difference. Here’s how:

  • Sand Doesn’t Hold Water: Regular soil absorbs water, causing it to swell and form puddles. Sand, on the other hand, allows water to percolate through.
  • Faster Drainage, Less Slippery Field: The water efficiently drains away, preventing the formation of puddles and keeping the outfield firm. This reduces the risk of players slipping and sustaining injuries.

P.R. Viswanathan, the BCCI’s South Zone curator, sheds light on the benefits of SubAir. He highlights that sand, while expensive, offers significant advantages. It ensures efficient drainage and a less slippery surface, minimizing injury risks. However, maintaining a sand-based outfield, especially in cooler climates like Bengaluru, requires constant vigilance to prevent fungal growth.

The SubAir system has proven its effectiveness before. Last year, on May 21st, 2023, heavy rains threatened to disrupt the RCB vs Gujarat Titans (GT) match. However, thanks to the SubAir system, the outfield was ready for play by 8:25 PM, allowing the entire match to be completed without losing a single over. GT went on to win the match, chasing down a target of 197 runs in just 19.1 overs.

The SubAir system provides a much-needed safety net for the upcoming RCB vs CSK clash. Fans can now look forward to an exciting match, regardless of the weather. The innovative drainage system ensures a full 20-over contest, where cricketing skills, not the weather, will determine the winner. So, cricket enthusiasts in Bengaluru, get ready to witness a thrilling battle between two of the IPL’s most iconic teams.
