Having led the Blue Tigers to victory in consecutive championships such as the Intercontinental Cup and the SAFF Championship, Chhetri is deeply grateful for the unwavering support he receives from fans. The adoration he experiences from the masses is a constant source of joy and appreciation.
Chhetri expresses his sheer delight at the path his playing career has taken. He has excelled not only in numerous clubs across India but also during his stints abroad. However, it is his inviolable connection with the national football team that continues to earn him affection wherever he goes.
Reflecting on his extraordinary journey, Chhetri humbly admits, “If I had been handed a book and asked to write down my dream life back then, it would not have come close to the reality I’m living today. I consider it an immense privilege and honour to be who I am. I feel incredibly blessed. The years I’ve played, the achievements I’ve attained, and the remarkable individuals I’ve shared the dressing room with—it’s an unbelievable feat. I owe immense gratitude to many people for all of this,” Chhetri shared during an exclusive interview on the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) show, “In The Stands.”
Despite the overwhelming warmth he receives, Sunil Chhetri remains in awe of notable personalities from different walks of life. He appreciates the courage exhibited by his millions of fans when they approach him to strike up a conversation. Chhetri confessed that he has experienced nervousness when encountering icons like Sachin Tendulkar and legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan at public events in the past.
“When I meet Mary Kom, she knows that I am her fan. I have had the pleasure of meeting Neeraj Chopra, who reciprocated the same feeling with great kindness. When I first met Mr. Bachchan, I was a bit hesitant, but I mustered the strength to let him know that I am a big fan. The first time I met Tendulkar, I felt a bit nervous. We were both invited as chief guests at a football tournament. He was incredibly kind, and although I rarely find myself at a loss for words, I was hesitant to express just how much of an inspiration he is to me and the entire nation,” Chhetri revealed.
Interestingly, Sunil Chhetri finds a strong connection with Indian cricket stalwart Virat Kohli. Hailing from the same city of Delhi, the two legends share a parallel journey in their respective careers. They emphasize the importance of strict dietary regimes and lead by example through their exceptional fitness standards. Chhetri revealed that he and Kohli have had in-depth discussions about handling pressure and overcoming expectations.
“We talk about everyday things. We share laughter, jokes, and funny anecdotes. We’ve had deep and meaningful conversations too. We don’t talk every day, and there are phases when months pass without communication. But the beauty lies in the fact that when we do catch up, we pick up right where we left off. The times when I have felt the weight of my identity and the pressure to perform, and the times when he has felt the same, those are the moments we have connected the most. He understands that not everyone comprehends what we go through, and that understanding resonates with me,” Chhetri shared warmly.
Sunil Chhetri’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, capturing the hearts of football fans across the nation. With unwavering passion, determination, and an unyielding spirit, he continues to inspire the next generation of Indian athletes, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
