Early Life & Journey :
Sikander Raza is a Pakistan-born (Sialkot, Punjab) cricketer who plays for the Zimbabwean national team as an All-Rounder and he is a key player for the African outfit. He did not grow up playing the game of Cricket very seriously but rather in leisure time.
His dream was to serve the army by becoming a fighter pilot. Raza’s parents approved his desire and wish to become a pilot in the Air force, thus he appeared in Air force college exam and studied the subject for 3 years. He was among the exclusive 60 students who got selected out of the 60,000 aspirants.
However, he was handed with a setback in just his 3rd year when he could not clear an eye test. His first and perhaps the most desired dream came to an end but soon he moved to Scotland’s Glasgow Caledonian University to study software and that’s where he started playing Cricket.
Later on in 2002, he moved to parents’ at Zimbabwe and further continued his cricketing journey. 5 years later, Sikandar Raza made his first-class debut in 2007 and represented the Northern region of Zimbabwe. His debut season saw him score 1 half-century in 9 outings.
He could not play the entire season due to his studies but he returned with more seriousness in 2010-11 and scored 625 runs with an average of 41. With passing seasons, Sikandar Raza projected himself as an explosive top-order batter. His efforts were not going unnoticed as the Zimbabwean cricket board monitored his progress and announced him for a practice match against Bangladesh in 2011.
Raza was replacing Vusimuzi Sibanda and in his absence, the former shined and ZC in 2013 handed him his first International cap against Bangladesh in a 3-match ODI Series. He received his 1st International Test call-up in 4 months time. His Test debut might have been emotional given the fact that Raza was born in Sialkot, Pakistan.
