At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday, Shubman Gill shone as Gujarat Titans overcame SunRisers Hyderabad by 34 runs to clinch a playoff position for themselves. With the victory, GT qualified for the IPL 2023 Qualifier 1. Hardik Pandya’s team was given the opportunity to open the batting, and Gill made sure Gujarat scored a respectable total.
He led the club to 188 for 9 in 20 overs despite SRH bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar posting figures of 5 for 30 while scoring his first IPL century (101 off 58). Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma each took four wickets as SRH were dismissed for 154 for 9 in response.
A seven-year-old photo of Gill and Virat Kohli has gone popular on social media following Gill’s first IPL century. In January 2016, after uploading the image to Instagram, Gill wrote: “With my idol #bcciawards #juniorcricketeroftheyear @virat.kohli good luck for Australia tour.”

After Gill’s first IPL century on Monday, a Twitter user posted the image on social media, and the fans reacted quickly.
In 2016, the pair posed for the photograph at the BCCI awards. Gill was awarded the best under-16 cricketer, while Kohli had won the Polly Umrigar Award for cricketer of the year.
As the cricketing community celebrated Gill’s first IPL century on Monday, even Kohli wrote to Gill on Instagram that was described as “out of this world,” summarising the influence the opening batter has had on him and the current crop of players.
“There is Gill and then there is potential. Lead the upcoming generation going forward. God bless you,” Kohli stated in his Instagram post, encouraging the young player to serve as an inspiration to the following generation.
