Vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 5 began on 28th July 2017 and ran up till 28th July 2017, and saw the participation of 12 teams that included the debut of four new teams: Gujarat Fortune Giants, UP Yoddha, Haryana Steelers and Tamil Thalaivas.
The tournament was organised by Star India and Mashal Sports.
As many as 400 players were enlisted for the auction and the total sum amount of Rs. 46.99 Crores was spent by all the 12 teams. The most expensive buy of the season was Nitin Tomar (Raider) who was acquired by the franchise UP Yoddha for the sum of Rs.93 Lakhs. The most expensive foreign player was Jang Kun Lee of South Korea, who was retained by Bengal Warriors for the sum amount of Rs. 80.3 Lakhs.
Teams were divided in two zones: Zone A and Zone B for the scheduled tournament.
Who Topped Zone A?
Led by Sukesh Hegde, Gujarat Fortunegiants topped Zone A with 15 wins out of the 22 matches played. Gujarat earned 87 points, followed by Puneri Paltan and Haryana Steelers in the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

Who Topped Zone B?
Led by Captain Surjeet Singh, Bengal Warriors finished as the number one side with 11 wins out of 22 matches. Bengal Warriors topped the table with 77 points. Patna Pirates came second with 10 wins out 22, finishing with 71 points to their name. Boasting of 8 wins out of the possible 22, U.P. Yoddha ranked third with 60 points in their pocket.

Which Team Went to the Playoffs?
The teams finishing in top three positions from both Zone A and Zone B are qualified for the playoffs, comprising of Qualifiers and Eliminators, followed by the Grand Final.
Six teams made it to the playoffs, namely Puneri Paltan, UP Yoddha, Haryana Steelers, Patna Pirates, Bengal Warriors and Gujarat Fortune Giants.
Eliminator 1: The first eliminator was played at Dome @ NSCI SVP Stadium, Mumbai, between Puneri Paltan and UP Yoddha on 23rd October, 2017.

Qualifier 1: The first ranked sides of Zone A and Zone B, Gujarat Fortune Giants and Bengal Warriors locked horns in the first Qualifier on 24th October at Dome@ NSCI SVP Stadium, Mumbai.

Eliminator 3: The winners of first and second eliminators Puneri Paltan and Patna Pirates played against each other in the third Eliminator at Dome@ NSCI SVP Stadium, Mumbai.

Qualifier 2: Patna Pirates fought their way out to play in the second qualifier against Bengal Warriors. The game was played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai.
Bengal Warriors 42-47 Patna Pirates
The final of Pro Kabaddi Season 5 saw Gujarat Fortunegiants squaring up against Patna Pirates. Gujarat Fortunegiants had a dream run as it was their debut season and they were playing their first finale match of the tournament.
Patna Pirates beat Bengal Warriors to qualify for the finals. Whereas, Gujarat Fortunegiants who topped Zone A beat Bengal Warriors to easily qualify for the finals.
In the final Patna Pirates amassed 55 points over 38 points scored by Gujarat Fortunegiants.
Pardeep Narwal was the star performer of the night. With his aggressive raids he broke through the defence of the Gujarat Fortunegiants. Gujarat Fortunegiants ended their campaign after finishing as the runner up of the season.
