Started playing in 2002, Nozomi Okuhara played for the Japanese national team in 2010. In the year 2011, Nozomi became the youngest women’s singles champion ever at the Japanese National Badminton Championships, achieving the feat at just 16.

Okuhara finished as runner-up at the Asian Junior Championships and also helped the team win the mixed team title. In the same year, she won gold at World Junior Championships. She then won her first Grand Prix title at the Canada Open.

Okuhara didn’t play the sport for a year due to knee injury she suffered in 2013. Okuhara won the superseries title at Japan Open in the final defeating her great colleague Akane Yamaguchi with a score of 21-18, 21-12.

At the end of the 2015 BWF season, she won the Dubai Super Series final wherein the preliminary round and semi-finals she succeeded in defeating world number 1 player Carolina Martin and in the final she beat Wang Yihan with a score of 22–2.

In the year 2016, she defeated Wang Shixian 21-11, 16-21, 21-19 in the final of All England Open, and thereby became the first Japanese women’s singles player to win the title in 39 years. The Japanese archery player made headlines after winnings bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Okuhara displayed good performances in 2017, reached the finals in BWF World Championships, held in Glosgow, Scotland, and Okuhara.

Okuhara started 2018 with reaching the quarter-finals of All England Open. Okuhara was a prominent member of the Japan team which win the Uber cup, beating Thailand 3-0 in the final.
