Matthew Brett Cardona, popularly known by his ring name Zack Ryder, is an American professional wrestler, currently working for World Wrestling Entertainment on Raw brand. Ryder took his training under Mikey Whipwreck and began wrestling for New York Wrestling Connection in 2004 with the ring name Brett Mathews. He teamed up with Brian Myers and together defeated  NYWC Tag Team Champions Dickie Rodz and Mason Raige to become champions.

In 2005, Cardona signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and changed his ring name to Brett Major. He joined  Deep South Wrestling (DSW), where he again teamed up with Myers as Bryan Major to defeat  The Untouchables (Deuce Shade and Dice Domino) for DSW Tag Team Championship. They also won  OVW Southern Tag Team Championship once.

Ryder made WWE main roster debut in 2007 and since then has won the Intercontinental Championship once, United States Championship once, and the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship twice. Ryder is also a YouTuber, started his web series called ‘Z! True Long Island Story,’ which consists of a collection of short comments from him, with specific comedic allusions to wrestling as well as pop culture. He had also appeared in the documentary series ‘Toy Hunter’ which airs on the Travel channel. He has also released a music album ‘Hoeski’ which hit more than 100,000 views in just four days.

EARLY LIFE

Cardona was born on May 14, 1985, in Merrick, New York. He developed his interest in wrestling as a young boy and was trained under Mikey Whipwreck. He persuaded his academics from Calhoun High School.

Cardona resides in  Orlando, Florida, United States. Cardona went into many relationships that started with  Tenille Dashwood aka Emma in 2015. In 2017, Zack Ryder was rumored to be dating Laurel Van Ness, a Canadian professional wrestler.  Cardona announced his engagement to fellow professional wrestler, Chelsea Green in 2019.

 

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Cardona started his professional wrestling career with New York Wrestling Connection in 2004, with the ring name Brett Matthews. He formed a tag team with Bryan Myers and the duo went on to defeat the NYWC Tag Team Champions Dickie Rodz and Mason Raige to become Champions. They later lost the titles to The Dead Presidents. They again bagged the championship from the defending champions but eventually lost it to the BS Express, which consisted of Tony Burma and Mike Spinelli.

Cardona signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment in 2005, and later joined Deep South Wrestling where he changed his name to Brett Majors with his teammate  Myers, who also changed his ring name Bryan Majors. They together won  DSW Tag Team Championship against the Untouchables, which consisted of Dice Domino, and Deuce Shade. They eventually lost the titles to Urban Assault which consisted of Eric Perez and Sonny Siaki. They also won  OVW Southern Tag Team Championship at Ohio Valley Wrestling.

In 2007, he bagged a chance to battle for the WWE Tag Team Championship. At the Great American Bash, he and Curt Hawkins eventually managed to win the championship, making them the youngest team to earn the victory. Hawkins and Ryder lost the titles to The Colóns (Carlito and Primo).  In 2009, he made his return to the ECW, where he bagged an opportunity for a WWE Championship Match against the champion Sheamus which lasted only 11 seconds. He later fought John Cena to earn another attempt at the WWE Championship, which he lost.

Zack Ryder captures his first Intercontinental Championship after winning a Ladder Match at WrestleMania 32, while bagged United States Championship against Dolph Ziggler at WWE TLC in 2011. He entered the 2013 Royal Rumble match, only to be eliminated within two minutes. He was also unsuccessful the next year in winning the Andre the Giant Memorial Royal Battle at WrestleMania, a battle royal for the US Championship, as well as a battle royal for the Intercontinental Championship at Battleground.

 

In 2015, he showed up in WWE’s developmental system NXT, where he formed a tag team with Mojo Rawley.  At WrestleMania 34, Ryder participated in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. However, he was eliminated soon

At Wrestlemania 35, Ryder and Hawkins successfully defeated The Revival to capture the titles. Ryder and Hawkins dropped the titles back to The Revival in a tag-team triple threat match.

Ryder made his video game debut as a playable character in  WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011, WWE ’12, WWE ’13, WWE 2K14, WWE 2K16, WWE 2K17, WWE 2K18, WWE 2K19, and now in WWE 2K20.
