MS Dhoni Reveals Why He Texted Virat Kohli After Captaincy Exit, Watch Heartwarming Clip

Relationships are formed organically, in career or in life. In the world of cricket, there have been several partnerships and friendships that have germinated on field and lasted long enough years after.

Out of the numerous bonding examples, one of the highly talked about ones is the bond between two former Indian captains – MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Having played ample cricket together and under each other’s captaincy, their relationship has been a unique blend of camaraderie and affinity for each other.

One of the best cricketers of the current generation, Kohli had resigned as captain of his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the T20 team in September 2021 to focus on his performances. He was abruptly replaced as a captain of the Indian ODI team the same year, a move quite unexpected to the world.

Subsequently, he made another shocking revelation of relinquishing his Test leadership the following year in January 2022. Since then, Kohli has not donned the skipper’s hat but continues to provide his invaluable contribution whenever necessary.

The flamboyant and aggressive player Virat Kohli had replaced MS Dhoni as Indian men’s cricket team captain in Tests in 2014 and in the white-ball format in 2017. Kohli revealed way back in a media interview that when he announced his decision, Dhoni was the only player of the multiple names he played with, who sent a message when he took the tough call of leaving the national team’s captaincy role.

Virat Kohli revealed the incident in September of 2022 in his words during a post-match presentation- “Let me tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I had played previously; that was MS Dhoni. Many people have my number. On TV, people give lots of suggestions, people have a lot to say. But none of the people who had my number sent me a message.”

Moving ahead to 2025, MS Dhoni has now shared the reason behind sending a text message to Kohli despite not being highly tech-savvy or a regular with staying in touch sort of a person. At a marketing event, one of the attendees posed a question related to this information and finally Dhoni did respond with his side of the story.

Dhoni said, “It’s deja vu, I was asked a similar question in a JioHotsar show; you will see the answer during the IPL. I’m not great when it comes to being in touch with people but yeah, certain times when someone needs you, you just drop in a message.”

While Thala expressed his response jovially like he always does, but his heart-warming opinion on the instance only displays the bromance between the two Indian cricket stalwarts. For someone like MS, who does have a reputation for not being easily reachable on phone and staying disconnected more often than not, this thoughtful gesture surely did leave the fans of both players joyful.
