Manchester United drew 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday 18 October 2026, a result that leaves manager Michael Carrick under further pressure. Bryan Mbeumo gave the visitors the lead before Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled after the break. The point extends a difficult spell for United, who are now six matches without a win in all competitions and remain without a league victory since August.
Mbeumo struck in the 35th minute, finishing low past Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford after a cross from Youri Tielemans. Calvert-Lewin equalised in the 51st minute with a close‑range finish after United failed to clear a corner; Tarik Muharemovic knocked the corner down for the striker, and the ball beat United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Carrick changed United's shape to a back three with no recognised striker for most of the game. Tielemans operated in a more attacking role. Lisandro Martinez started but was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui at half‑time, and Carrick kept the back three. United faded as the game went on and were outrun again. Defender Harry Maguire said, "We worked on it [the change of shape] this week."
Carrick, who wore headphones this week and so did not hear the noise around United, spoke of the contest afterwards. He said, "There was definitely an edge to the game, an intensity." He added, "It definitely tests you and it wasn't a perfect performance, but there was a lot in there to show." Mbeumo offered the manager some solace.
Pundit Jamie Carragher said, "In isolation, going to Leeds and performing how they did was a decent result." Leeds had been looking for their first home win over United in 24 years. United had lost to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League earlier in the week, and Martinez, who criticised the club hierarchy over a lack of summer spending after that defeat, later apologised before being named in the starting XI.
United have 7 points from 7 league games and one win in seven games in all competitions, placing them in the bottom half of the table. One win from seven league games is the fewest United have had at this stage of a top‑flight season since 1986‑87 and marks their worst start to a season since that year. Carrick's future remains far from secure.
Ruben Amorim was sacked within 24 hours of a 1‑1 draw at Leeds last season, but the same result is unlikely to cost Carrick his job this week. Carrick assessed the situation as "doesn't look great" and, in a subheading, called the performance a "fresh start". United's next fixture is away to Serie A side Como in the Champions League on Wednesday 21 October 2026.
