Kiran Pahal Biography: Early Life, Domestic Career, Achievements, Social Media and Many More

Kiran Pahal is an Indian track and field athlete who specialises in the 400 metres and has emerged as a figure in India’s women’s quarter-mile and relay setup. Born on 5 August 2000, she comes from Haryana and has represented India at major international competitions. In September 2026, Pahal became part of India’s gold-medal winning women’s 4x400m relay team at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

Early Life:

Kiran Pahal was born in Haryana and grew up in Gumad village in the Sonipat district. Her early sporting journey was far from easy. Her father, Om Prakash, worked as a munshi at a tehsil court and was the main earning member of the family, while her mother Maya Devi is a homemaker. Pahal has spoken publicly about the financial difficulties her family faced and the social resistance she encountered while pursuing athletics.

According to reports, she initially trained without proper running equipment and, for a period, walked to the practice ground. Her family later arranged a second-hand bicycle for her. Local opposition also caused her training to be stopped temporarily, but she eventually returned to athletics. Her father remained an important source of encouragement and supported her sporting ambitions despite the family’s limited financial resources.

She started athletics during her school years and gradually focused on the 400m, a demanding event requiring speed, endurance and race management. Her rise also reflects the importance of domestic competitions, where consistent performances helped her earn opportunities at national and international events. She has continued to represent Indian athletics in both individual and relay competitions, giving her experience across formats.

Pahal began improving her training environment by moving to Subhash Stadium in Sonipat and later to Rohtak, where she could access a synthetic track.

Domestic Career:

Pahal gradually established herself in Indian athletics, particularly in the 400m. She represented Haryana and later became associated with the Indian Railways, joining as a junior clerk through the sports quota in 2021. She also trained under coach Ashish Singh Chhikara, who worked with her on an athlete-specific programme.

One of her major early breakthroughs came at the 2022 National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai, where she won the women’s 400m gold. She had also been part of relay teams that achieved national-level success in earlier competitions.

Pahal continued to compete in domestic meets and returned to the top of the 400m field in 2025, when she won the women’s 400m at the Indian Open Athletics event. In June 2026, she again won the 400m at the Indian Athletics Series in Surat, clocking 53.49 seconds. Her personal best remains 50.92 seconds, recorded in 2024.

International Achievements:

Pahal reached a major milestone in June 2024 when she clocked 50.92 seconds in the semifinals of the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Panchkula. The performance was faster than the Olympic qualifying standard of 50.95 seconds. It helped her qualify for the women’s 400m at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Her Olympic debut was an important step in her international career, although she did not advance beyond the heats.

Asian Games 2026 Gold Medal

The biggest achievement of Pahal’s career so far came at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. She was part of India’s women’s 4x400m relay quartet alongside M R Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj.

The Indian team produced a strong performance in the final and clocked 3:29.69 to win the gold medal. Bahrain finished second in 3:30.21, while China took bronze in 3:31.02. Pahal ran the opening leg for India. Although the team was initially behind, the quartet recovered during the race, with Vithya Ramraj completing the comeback on the anchor leg.

Pahal also earned a silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay campaign at the same Asian Games. She competed in the qualifying heat, helping India reach the final. The mixed relay team eventually finished second behind Bahrain.

Among Pahal’s notable achievements are the 400m gold at the 2022 National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, national-level relay medals, the 2024 qualification for the Paris Olympics, and the 2026 Asian Games women’s 4x400m relay gold.

Her 50.92-second personal best in the 400m made her the second Indian woman to break the 51-second barrier and placed her among the fastest Indian women over the distance. Her relay success in 2026 added an international title to her résumé.
