Career Highlights

M. Chanda, a 21-year-old middle-distance runner from Alipur village in North Delhi, has emerged victorious in the women’s 800m race of the 62nd National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship at Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium. Chanda outduelled more fancied runners, including Punjab’s Harmilan Bains, to seal a berth for the Hangzhou Asian Games this year. The Nationals proved to be a good outing for Delhi’s runners, with three Delhi athletes advancing to the final of the women’s 200m and an equal number in the final of the women’s 800m. Chanda’s gold medal-winning time of two minutes 03.82 seconds was better than the Asian Games qualification criteria set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

In the fast tactical women’s 800m final, Chanda got blocked in the opening 300m of the two-lap race but pushed hard to open up a small gap between her and the chasing pack, including favorite Harmilan Bains. Chanda also won bronze in the 1500m behind Harmilan Bains and KM Deeksha.

Despite hardships, Chanda has made gradual progress, winning her first international medal, a silver in the women’s 1500m at the 2019 SAF Games in Nepal. Her personal best in 800m is 2:01.58 seconds clocked in May at a domestic meet in Ranchi.

M. Chanda, a talented athlete, experienced a challenging phase during the COVID-19 pandemic, practicing in parks in Alipur. However, she returned to her best form in 2021, winning two gold medals in the 800m and 1500m at an invitational track and field meet in Kazakhstan. Despite a heel injury, Chanda is set to compete in the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 12-16. The Asian Games, starting September 23, will be held in China, and a gold medal in the 800m will ensure her automatic qualification to the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships in Hungary.
