Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium in the Premier League on 17 October 2026. The hosts ended the match with nine men after Yehor Yarmoliuk and Vitaly Janelt were both dismissed. Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute, lifting Liverpool above Brentford into fifth place in the table.
Brentford went ahead in the 44th minute, when Keane Lewis-Potter headed in from a cross by Thiago. Shortly before that, a penalty awarded to Liverpool was overturned: Mac Allister was brought down by Dango Ouattara, but the decision was reversed once Ouattara was seen to have touched the ball first. Liverpool therefore went into the break behind, though the half had one more twist.
Yarmoliuk was sent off in first‑half stoppage time (45+8) for a headbutt on Jeremy Jacquet before a Liverpool corner. Referee John Brooks showed a straight red card for violent conduct after checking the pitch‑side monitor. Liverpool also lost Dominik Szoboszlai to injury in the first half, and his replacement at the interval, Jeremie Frimpong, lasted only seven minutes before he too had to leave the field.
Víctor Muñoz levelled in the 62nd minute. Florian Wirtz sent him through, and he turned inside Lewis‑Potter before shooting left‑footed past Kelleher. Eight minutes later Mac Allister crossed to the far post, Bradley Barcola headed the ball back, and Isak finished low past the Brentford goalkeeper. Isak was starting after missing the previous two matches, and it was his fifth goal of the Premier League season.
Janelt was shown a second yellow card in the 92nd minute for tripping substitute Rio Ngumoha on the edge of the Brentford box, reducing the hosts to nine men. Igor Thiago then missed a close‑range chance to equalise late on. Brentford manager Keith Andrews said of the booking: "Could there have been a bit more common sense with the second yellow? I think so."
Andrews also said Yarmoliuk's red card "changes the dynamics of the game" and described Jacquet as "cute and clever" for his part in the incident. On the injuries, Szoboszlai's problem is a recurrence of his hamstring trouble, while Frimpong's is a new injury. Both are expected to be out "for some time". Liverpool's setbacks came in a match that still brought them all three points.
Isak has scored five goals in five games against Brentford, and only Erling Haaland has scored more Premier League goals this season. Barcola hit a Champions League hat‑trick against LASK on Wednesday (14 October) but still has no Premier League goal. Isak, Wirtz and Barcola formed a £350 million front line. Elsewhere on the same day, Manchester City beat Ipswich 3-2, with Haaland scoring again.
