India To Host 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Friday declared that India will host the Men’s Hockey World Cup in 2023. The FIH further informed that Spain and Netherlands will be the co-hosts of the 2022 FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup.

The men’s Hockey World Cup is scheduled from January 13 to July 29, 2023, while the women’s World Cup will take place from July 1 to July 17, 2022. It was also announced that the venues for the events would be decided by the host nations and it would be notified to the press later.

India will become the only country to have staged four men’s Hockey World Cups. India have previously hosted the quadrennial event in 1982 in Mumbai, 2010 in New Delhi and 2018 in Bhubaneswar. Currently, India are leveled with Netherlands in the list who have hosted the prestigious event thrice.

India pipped Belgium and Malaysia who were in the race to host upcoming edition of the men’s Hockey World Cup. Reports claim that Hockey India was keen to host the prestigious event as they did not want to miss the opportunity to bring into light how the sport has grown in the country post 75 years of independence.

Expressing his delight on winning the hosting rights of men’s Hockey world cup 2023, the Hockey India President Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad said “We are all very delighted to have won the bid to host the 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup. When we had made the bid, we wanted to give our country another reason to celebrate 75 years of independence adding to that the fact that our last win was registered in 1975. And what better way to celebrate than to witness a pinnacle global event of our national sport on our soil.”

Hockey India had received a lot of accolades from around the globe after hosting the 14th edition of men’s Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
