IND vs SL 1st ODI : Ishan Kishan becomes the first batsman to get dropped after a double century

In recently, held ODI series played between India and Bangladesh, Opener Ishan Kishan acquired a new milestone by smashing a double century against Bangladesh in 3rd ODI. This was the fastest double century of all time in ODI’s till date which he made in just 126 balls and also the first ever to be hit along with the maiden ton. In this match, India scored a total of 409 for 8 wickets and won the match by 227 runs.

In the current ongoing series between India and Sri Lanka a shocking news came infront recently when Indian skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that Shubhman Gill will play along with him as an opening partner for the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka. Gill will be the replacement of Ishan Kishan. This is for the first time that an ODI player is dropped after a double century. This kind of a stunt had previously taken place in test format.

Players who were dropped before this, after scoring a 200 were :-

  1. G Boycott scored 246* – Test vs Ind (1967)
  2. A De Silva scored 206 – Test vs Ban (2002)
  3. J Gillespie scored 201* – Test vs Ban (2004)

Ishan who made a double century in his last 50 over match being dropped for the 1st ODI makes no sense. Ishan and Shubhman, both were the part of the team in t20 series played against sri lanka. But, if we come from the other angle, then it could be fair for Gill to get a chance to show his caliber. As Gill has been performing consistently well in his last played matches and deserve a chance to be in. Runs have been coming through his bat in his last matches he played against SA and NZ, where he scored a half century against newzealand and performed well in most of the matches.

No, doubt Ishan Kishan has been performing magnificently well and has the ability to make his space in any conditions. But, it can be a fair call to give a chance to others who also has been contributing for the team and the game. This will raise the overall moral and team spirit of the players.
