Guide for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 starting from 16th October

The coveted mega event of the shortest format of cricket, the ICC T20 World cup 2022 in Australia is just 3 days away from kicking off. This will be the 8th edition of the tournament and there have been 6 different champions with West Indies the only team to win twice in the last 7 editions.

For only the second time, the T20 world cup is taking place in back-to-back years. Defending champions Australia will be aiming to take advantage of the home conditions and retain the trophy which they won against New Zealand in last year’s Final.

A total of 45 matches will be played in venues like Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth starting from October 16. Adelaide Oval and Sydney Cricket ground will foster the semi-finals and the historic Melbourne Cricket ground will feature the Finale of the mega event.

How will the tournament operate?

The tournament will kick start with Group stage matches starting from October 16th. The group stages will determine which 4 teams will advance to the Super 12s and join rest of the 8 teams. After the Super 12 matches, the Semi-Finals will take place on November 9 and 10.

Round 1 of the T20 world cup will feature a total of 8 teams divided into 2 groups. The Winners and the Runners-up of Group A and Group B will move forward to Round 2 that is Super 12s. Now lets find out the teams in both groups.

Group A – Namibia, Netherlands, Sri-Lanka and United Arab Emirates

Group B – Ireland, Scotland, West Indies and Zimbabwe

Super 12s

Once the Round 1 concludes it will be time for the Super 12s to be staged. The Super 12s are also divided into two respective groups of 6 teams which will look this:- 

Group A – Australia, New Zealand, England, Afghanistan, Group A Winner and Group B Runner-up

Group B – India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, Group B Winner and Group A runner-up

Teams from both Group A and B will face off once against each other with other 5 teams in the same group and the Top 2 teams will go on to the Semis.

The first fixture of the Super 12s will see a replay of last year’s Final between Australia and New Zealand on October 22nd 2022 at the Sydney cricket ground. The following day on October 23rd will feature another mouth watering contest between long-time arch rivals India and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket ground. 

Semi-Finals 

Winner of Group A and Runner-up from Group B will feature in the first semi-final set to be staged on November 9th at the Sydney Cricket ground. Semi-Final 2 of the T20 world cup will feature the Winner of Group B and the runner-up from Group A on 10th November at Adelaide Oval.

Finale

On November 13th, we will be getting the new Champion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Winners from both the Semi-Finals will lock horns with each other at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
