Gagan Narang leads the charge at Paris Olympics, PV Sindhu will be the female Flag bearer

The Indian contingent is getting ready for the Paris Olympics 2024. Gagan Narang, a four-time Olympian and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in shooting, has been appointed as the Chef de Mission. This news comes with another significant announcement: badminton superstar PV Sindhu will be India’s female flag bearer.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced Narang’s appointment on Monday. He steps in for the legendary boxer Mary Kom, who had to resign due to personal reasons.

“I was looking for an Olympic medalist to lead our contingent, and my young colleague is an apt replacement for Mary Kom,” said IOA President PT Usha. Narang’s experience as an Olympian himself makes him a strong choice to guide the Indian athletes in Paris.

PV Sindhu as Flag Bearer

PT Usha also revealed that PV Sindhu will be India’s female flag bearer at the opening ceremony on July 26th. Sindhu, the only Indian woman to win two Olympic medals, will walk alongside table tennis champion A. Sharath Kamal.

“I am delighted to announce that PV Sindhu will be the female flag bearer alongside Sharath Kamal,” said Usha. “I am confident that our athletes are well prepared to deliver the best results for India in the Paris Olympic Games.”

Mary Kom’s Stepping Down

Earlier in April, Mary Kom had expressed her regret at having to step down from the Chef de Mission role due to unforeseen personal circumstances. “It is embarrassing for me to retreat from a pronounced commitment,” she wrote, “but I am left with no choice.”

Nevertheless, she actively embraced all the responsibilities of the role but whatever personal problems she might have will hinder her from effectively carrying out all the responsibilities that came with the position. She attempted to look for other alternative arrangements, however, being far from family at this moment was something that she could not overcome.

However, Gagan Narang’s leadership and PV Sindhu’s motivating presence as flag bearers give the Indian contingent a good facade.

Paris Olympics 2024 is an interesting event for the Indians but it will also be a challenging tournament. With such devoted administrators and experienced officers like Narang and talented players like Sindhu and Kamal India is set to make its presence deeply felt on the international level.
