Fed Cup: Rutuja Bhosale, Ankita Raina Win as India Beat Uzbekistan

The Indian Fed Cup campaign was lit up and gained momentum after Rutuja Bhonsle and Ankita Raina lead India to its first victory at the tennis championship. Rutuja and Ankita Raina both won their respective singles matches to help India win the Fed Cup tie against Uzbekistan by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead. Later Indian pair of Riya Bhatia and Sowjanya Bavisetti triumphed in the doubles tie against Karimjanova Yasmia and Normurodova Seton to blank Uzbekistan 3-0.

Rutujia won her tie 2-6 6-2 7-5 after trailing initially to help India to the lake a 1-0 lead. Ankita registered a straight sets 7-5,6-1, while Riya Bhatia and Sowjanya Bavisetti won 6-3, 6-1 in the doubles tie.

On day two of the round-robin tournament, Rutuja and Ankita were once again handed the responsibility to lead the Indian single campaign after they had faltered in the tie against China. However, this time around both the players were well-prepared to dig deep for a victory.

Rutuja who opened the proceedings for the day did not look at par against her Uzbek Akgul Amanmuradova and lost the opening set 2-6. However, Rutuja came back strongly and erased a one-set deficit to defeat Amanmuradova 2-6 6-2 7-5 thus helping India to a 1-0 lead.

Now it was the turn of India number one singles player Ankita Raina to take the court, and she showed some exceptional skills to take the first set in the third set point to take the lead. The second set was one-sided with Ankita zooming to a 4-1 lead with a double break. This was Ankita‘s second win over Sabina in six matches.

India had lost 0-3 to China on the opening day of the competition on Tuesday. India will now face Korea on Thursday. The Indian team lost 0–3 to China in the first match. With this six-team match, the two top teams will qualify for the Fed Cup playoffs to be held in April.
