Ex Captain of Indian Kabaddi Team Deepak Hooda Booked for Dowry

In a country like India, famous players and celebrities often come under the radar for being involved in dowry-related controversies, although these tend to be blown out of proportion by the media to garner more publicity.

There have been a few instances in the past and these complaints often involve unprecedented demands for financial or materialistic gifts from the woman’s family. If brought out by news houses, they can lead to significant social and legal issues and impact the credibility of the player’s reputation in society.

One such name that has come under the limelight for wrong reasons and has found himself embroiled in a legal dispute is none other than the former captain of the Indian Men’s Kabaddi Team, Deepak Hooda. He has apparently been booked along with his sister Poonam, under multiple sections of the IPC of the recently implemented Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The brother – sister duo are residents of Hisar in Haryana, and the local police has registered an official case against the former skipper cum BJP leader on account of dowry harassment charges. The complaint was filed by Deepak’s wife, Saweety Boora, an Indian boxer and a previous World Championship gold medalist.

The registration of the FIR has indeed been confirmed by a senior police official and reported in press by the local media authorities too. In her complaint, Hooda’s wife Saweety has alleged that Deepak had been torturing her since their recent marriage in 2022. She has claimed that four days prior to their wedding, Poonam (her sister in-law) demanded a Fortuner SUV as dowry item instead of a Hyundai Creta that her family had actually planned to gift.

Saweety has alleged that despite her family providing the demanded dowry worth approximately INR 1 crore and gifting the desired vehicle, Hooda and his sister subjected her to physical assault, harassment, torture and even asked for additional dowry later.

Saweety has further claimed that Deepak additionally pressured her to arrange INR ₹1 crore for his political campaign when he decided to contest the 2024 assembly polls. In a shocking state of events, she has also told the police that Deepak reportedly forced her to quit boxing as a career and focus on the household chores.

As per the media sources and relatives of the couple, the family undertook several attempts to save the marriage, but Saweety was left helpless, and the only way out was by filing a legal complaint and opting for the divorce route. As per the report published by local media, Saweety has sought INR 50 lakhs as alimony and INR 1.5 lakh per month for her personal expenses.

In a cross-complaint and response to his ex-wife’s charges, Hooda has alleged in his version that Boora’s family took substantial amounts of money from him before their marriage and never returned it. He claims that Boora’s family coerced him into transferring funds into their accounts, which were later used to purchase property in Hisar. Hooda also alleges that Boora attacked him with a knife while he was asleep and threatened to damage his political career.

With both parties engaged in a legal battle and attempting to malign each other’s name by washing their dirty line in public, as the SP of Hisar, the investigations were underway, and allegations of both sides are being thoroughly examined. This high-profile case showcases the complex dynamics of marital discords, irrespective of the partners being accomplished athletes or regular citizens. We will have to wait and see what verdict is adjudged in the currently sub-judice case.
