Deepak Hooda Biography:

Deepak Hooda is the perfect example of a 21st century’s ‘utility cricketer’. In simpler words, he possesses all the three qualities that can help you stay afloat in this cut-throat competitive circuit. One, he is a clean striker of the cricket ball with a good average and a healthy strike rate. Two, as his coach Sanjiv Sawant says, he is a very accurate bowler. Lastly, he is electric in the field.

For all of these reasons, Hooda is often called a hurricane. Just like a hurricane, Hooda is capable of causing massive destruction in no time. He was one of the mainstays of the Indian U19 side back in 2014, and has also been useful for Baroda. After a brilliant stint with Rajasthan Royals, Hooda was signed up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 4.2 crores. However, his form has gone down a bit in the recent past. That can be understood by his recent contract value at Kings XI Punjab, which is of INR 50 lakhs, far off from what he once used to receive.

Early Life

Hooda was born on April 19, 1995 in Rohtak, Haryana. His mentor, Sanjiv Sawant played a huge role in making him a world-class batsman. Deepak has a brother named Ashish Hooda. Ashish also used to play cricket, but an unfortunate shoulder injury curbed his hopes of becoming a bowler. Deepak Hooda is a big fan of former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen and Indian legend Rahul Dravid. Amongst bowlers, he is a big fan of Shae Warne and Amit Mishra.

Hailing from Rohtak, Haryana, Deepak Hooda was ideally suited for all formats of the game. Deepak Hooda’ game allows him to play aggressively in limited-overs and has also the temperament needed to adjust in test cricket.

Hooda made his T20 debut on March 19, 2013, against Gujarat at Ahmedabad. He conceded 30 runs in this game without any wicket and scored only one run.

His List A debut came in November, against the same opposition, at the same venue. This time, he scored an 18-ball 20. He also picked up the crucial wickets of two veterans Parthiv Patel and Y Venugopal Rao.

His first-class debut came a month later, against Bengal at Vadodara. He scored a brilliant century in this game. He also picked up 3 vital wickets. One amongst those three was the man in form Suvojit Banerjee.

He set the tournament alight with his brilliant display of batting. In 6 matches, Hooda scored 235 runs at an average of 78.33 and a strike rate of 94.76.

Chasing a total of 88 runs against Scotland in the second match, Indian found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 22 for 5. However, Deepak Hooda and Sarfaraz Ahmed made sure they stitch an unbeaten partnership and help his team fetch a victory. Hooda stayed unbeaten at 22, while Sarfaraz scored 45.

Hooda made vital contributions lower down the order in the game against Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and England. He scored 68 runs off 99 balls against England before getting run-out and in the process and helped the team reach a competitive total. Rajasthan Royals bought the services of Baroda batsman in the 2015 edition of IPL. Playing as many as 14 matches for the franchise, he could not turn up with excellent performances. He scored 151 runs at an average of 16.77. However, his strike rate of 158 was something to consider him for further editions.

He played gripping knocks in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, making handy contribution lower down that order, helping him secure a new contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2016 edition of the tournament.

However, once again, the middle-order batsman endured a disappointing season, scoring 144 runs in 17 matches at an average of 10. 28 and strike rate of 119. He could not score a single half-century in the tournament.

Nonetheless, Hood is still being considered a handy pick at the lower down the order and also contributes with the ball. In his IPL career, he has played 61 matches so far in five seasons, scoring 524 runs at a strike rate of 127.18.

Though Hooda has not played a match for his country yet, he has come very close on more than one occasion. He was named in the Indian squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. However, he did not get an opportunity to play. In the same year, he made it to the men in blue’s squad for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. This time he got his opportunity to play. He scored a century in the very first match against Afghanistan U23.
