Demystifying GST in India: A Comprehensive Guide to Clarify the Distinction Between I-Gaming and Video Gaming Industries

Clarifying Confusion Between I-Gaming and Video Games:

The esports industry in India has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, but it faced a temporary setback with the ban of the popular game BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India). However, the return of the game has breathed new life into the sector, leading to a swift rebound in viewership and popularity, cementing its position as a thriving and dynamic industry.

Uncertainty Amidst Developmental Changes:
During a period of significant developmental changes in the Video Gaming and I-Gaming industries, there was substantial uncertainty surrounding the Goods and Services Tax (GST) applicable to these sectors. Mr. Vinod Tiwari, the current President of the Esports Federation of India and Director in the Olympics Council of Asia, played a pivotal role in clearing the air by engaging with various media outlets.

Clearing the GST Confusion:
Mr. Tiwari clarified that the 28% GST applies only to the I-Gaming sector, encompassing Real Money Gaming platforms, Fantasy platforms, teen patti, rummy, and similar activities. On the other hand, the Video Gaming Industry, which has received official recognition as a sport from the government, is subject to an 18% GST rate. This distinction is crucial in dispelling misconceptions and establishing the Video Gaming Industry as a distinct entity separate from other I-Gaming industries.

Amidst this evolving landscape, a critical aspect that requires clarity is the differentiation between “Game of Skills” and “Game of Chance.” This differentiation holds significant regulatory implications, and Mr. Tiwari emphasized the need for proper channelization and differentiation to resolve the existing confusion in India.

Empowering Players Through BGMI Resurgence:
Despite the challenges, the resurgence of BGMI has paved the way for numerous esports tournaments, providing players with the platform to showcase their talents and ascend the ranks in this rapidly growing industry.

Charting the Path Forward:

As the Video Gaming and Esports sector continues its journey, further clarity in terms of infrastructure and policies will play a pivotal role in propelling India’s esports landscape to new heights. With strong leadership and proactive measures, the industry is set to flourish, solidifying its position as a major player on the global esports stage.
