The Delhi High Court has slammed the Boxing Federation of India as the latter delayed their election which should have been conducted till now. They directed the Federation to complete their elections before December 31st, 2020. Justice Jayan Nath who was hearing the proceedings via video-conferencing said that they cannot give permission to the federation to delay their elections knowing the fact if elections don’t happen on time then the federation might have to face the repercussions of getting derecognized for not complying with National Sports Code.
The judgment was given in response to a petition filed by Uttar Pradesh Amateur Boxing Association challenging the decision of BFI president Ajay Singh where the latter tried to delay the elections. The bench has rejected the request made by the designated authorities asking for the extension of their tenure from three-six months on the ground of conducting elections later due to COVID-19 outbreak.
However, a statement has been issued by Sports Ministry that all the National Sports Federations should complete their elections before December 31st 2020 complying with the policy of the National Sports Code.
Boxing Federation of India is responsible for conducting all operations related to boxing in India and they are also an Indian member organization of the International Amateur Boxing Association(AIBA). BFI comprises around 6000 registered Indian boxers and they keep track of all athlete’s professional and personal records. As the Federation is completely digitized and their website gets updated on regular basis. There is certainly lot of work that needs to be done by the Indian Boxing Federation to uplift the standards of Indian boxers so that they can excel at the International level at a regular basis.
