Former Indian Cricketer, Aakash Chopra reckoned that Chennai Super Kings should release their skipper MS Dhoni ahead of the IPL 2021 Auctions. He reasoned that the next auction will be for three years and MS Dhoni isn’t going to stay with the franchise for the next three years.
“I feel the Chennai Super Kings should release MS Dhoni when they go for the auction. I am saying that because the next auction will be for 3 years and will Dhoni be with them for three years.”
He made this statement while observing that CSK will have to pay INR 15 Crores to retain MS Dhoni. This could become a problem for them going further as they won’t be able to find a worthy replacement for him the subsequent year for a similar amount.
“I am not saying that they should not keep Dhoni. But if they keep him as the first retention, then 15 crores will get removed from their kitty. MS Dhoni is worth every single penny of that but if he is not there with them for 3 years, then they will have the 15 crore with them next year but they will not get a player worth 15 crores.”
Chopra further stated that MS Dhoni himself should tell the franchise not to retain him in this year’s auction and rather use that TRM card to bring him back at any time.
“I feel MS Dhoni should himself ask CSK to put him in the auction and there is no question of ego in that because his team wants him to play for them and they can use the RTM card to take him at any time.”
Chennai Super Kings endured a disastrous run in the recently concluded IPL 2020. For the first time, in the history of IPL, CSK didn’t qualify for the playoffs. They finished second from the bottom with 6 wins in 14 matches. Ahead of 2020 IPL, the franchise is expected to make a lot of changes and come back stronger.
