England women's head coach Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year contract extension with the Football Association, which announced the news on 19 October 2026. The new deal keeps the 56-year-old in charge of the Lionesses through to the end of UEFA Women's Euro 2029. Her previous contract was due to run out at the end of the 2027 World Cup, so the agreement extends her tenure beyond that tournament.

Wiegman first took charge in 2021, and the new agreement would take her time in the job to eight years counted from her first game. Under her, England won Euro 2022, their first major women's trophy, and won it again in 2025. They also reached the 2023 World Cup final. The extension gives her the chance to lead England to a third straight European title.

Wiegman has won The Best FIFA Women's Coach award five times, which is a record. Speaking about the extension, she said: "I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football". Before the announcement she had faced questions about her future ahead of the recent World Cup play-offs against Greece, and she sidestepped them.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham also spoke about the new deal. He said: "There is no one better to lead the Lionesses into the next two tournaments." He went on: "Sarina's impact on English football has been immense, and she continues to inspire so many throughout the game." Earlier, before the extension was confirmed, Keira Walsh had said she would want Wiegman to stay.

England won the first leg of their World Cup play-off against Greece 3-1 in Crete. The second leg was played at the King Power Stadium in Leicester on 13 October 2026. Wiegman's previous extension, to 2027, was announced in January 2024. Wiegman could also have an eye on managing a Great Britain team if it qualifies for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

England's next assignment is a two-legged tie against Ukraine in Round 2 of the UEFA play-offs. The matches are on 26 November and 5 December. Winning the tie would guarantee England a place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The new contract means Wiegman is signed up beyond that tournament, through to the end of Euro 2029, which is the point the two-year extension reaches.

At 56, Wiegman remains at the head of an England side that won the European Championships in 2022 and 2025 and reached the 2023 World Cup final. Her five Best FIFA Women's Coach awards are a record. The FA has now committed to her through Euro 2029, while England's next fixtures are the Ukraine play-off legs on 26 November and 5 December.
