In the simplest of words, the total runs a player has scored divided by the total times they have been out, usually to two decimal places, is their batting average. So without further to do, let’s find out which 5 Batsmen has the highest average in ICC T20 world cup history.
- Virat Kohli – The former Indian captain who relinquished his captaincy following the 2021 T20 world cup has the highest average in the major ICC T20 tournament. Since making his T20 world cup debut in 2012, Kohli has gone on to play 21 matches including a Final in 2014 and semi-finals in 2016. Although he is yet to win the major ICC tournament but he ended the 2014 and 2016 edition as the Man of the tournament consecutively, which is the most by any player. His strike rate of 129.6 isn’t much of an issue for the bowlers but he has maintained an outstanding average of 76.81 with 845 runs to his name.
- Micheal Hussey – The former Australian great has the second highest average in T20 world cups. Hussey retired from all forms of cricket in 2016 and scored a combined 12,398 runs across all format. He was given the nickname of “Mr. Cricket” due to his impeccable knowledge about the game and he was one of the best technicians with the Bat. He took only 166 days to reach the 1000 run mark – the fastest in terms of number of days taken. Despite reaching the semi-finals in 2007 T20 world cup and final in 2010, Hussey eventually failed to the tournament. However, his semi-final performance against Pakistan during the 2010 T20 world cup will be remembered as one the best T20 world cup innings as he smashed 60 off 24 runs. In 21 innings, the left-handed batter scored 437 runs with a good average of 54.62.
- Kevin Pieterson – Regarded as one of the most explosive batsmen in world cricket during his playing days, Kevin Pieterson was one of the pioneers of English cricket who believed in smacking the ball more often than not. He introduced a fearless brand of cricket which helped him build a separate repertoire for himself. However, his international career came to a dramatic end but by the end of his time as a player, Pieterson scored 13,797 runs across all formats. He was one of the key figures behind England’s ICC T20 world cup triumph in 2010 where he finished as the second-highest run getter in the tournament. Coming back to his average, out of 15 T20 world cup matches, Kevin Pieterson scored 580 runs, averaging 54.62 per innings.
- David Wiese – Wiese was a late bloomer who rose to prominence in the shorter formats. He was an imposing all-rounder with the ability to take pace off the ball with a powerful lofted drive. After he signing the “Kolpak deal” with English county side Sussex, he could never play for South Africa again. His stint with the South African national teams lasted from 2013-2016 and after 5 years in 2021, he became eligible to represent Namibia in International cricket and also played last year’s T20 world cup wearing the Namibian jersey. In 11 ICC T20 world cup innings for both South Africa and Namibia, Wiese scored 255 runs and has the fourth highest average with 42.5.
- Jos Buttler – New England captain Jos Buttler will be leading his national side for the first time in a major ICC tournament. He filled the shoes of Eoin Morgan – who helped England win their first ever ICC 50 over World cup since the inception of cricket. Buttler is also the second most capped English T20I player and he is one of the most lethal strikers of the ball. The wicket-keeper batsman is 7th on the list of most sixes in T20 world cup with 26 maximums to his name. Playing in 21 T20 world cup innings, Jos Buttler has gathered 574 runs with a decent average of 41.
