After thrashing Liverpool 4-0, Manchester City suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton on Monday. With the defeat, Manchester City has now endured their third successive away defeat.
Manchester City made numerous changes in their starting eleven, while Southampton put their best foot forward. 16 minutes into the game, Che Adams scored the only goal in the match and thereby put his team ahead.
Goal-scorer Adam was signed for Southampton for a reported 15 million pounds in 2019 from Birmingham City.
Manchester City had 73 per cent of possession on the ball and blasted 24 shots on the goal post. However, the Southampton goalkeeper, Alex McCarthy saved everything that came his way.
McCarthy put on one of the best performances of his premier league career as he made a host of saves, helping his team register first win against Manchester City after six successive losses.
“If you have a goalkeeper playing like him, as a libero, it is normal that he isn’t always in his goal. Our goal was to be clinical and quick in your mind, and it was an unbelievable first touch and goal from Che,” he said.
With the defeat, Manchester City has now suffered their third successive away defeat, first time happened in Pep Guardiola‘s Manchester City career. With 66 points, Manchester City continues to be at the second spot with 89 points to their name, while Southampton climbs to 13th place with 43 points in 33 games.
Manchester City midfielder, Bernando Silva also expressed his disappointment for the defeat, promising for a better show next season.
“Man City needs to ‘improve’ away record in next season to win Premier League. But there’s no excuse for that, we need to improve next season if we want to win again the Premier League”. Manchester City midfielder was quoted as saying to Goal.com.
