Young Indian opener Shubman Gill is pleased that team management and captain Rohit Sharma have given him their full support, enabling him to play his “natural game” in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka. Gill was picked up in the team, in place of inform batsman Ishan Kishan and he fullfilled the hopes and expectations of the team management and the skipper by scoring a 70 run knock off just 60 balls.
With these innings, Gill accelarated team India’s scoreboard and set India’s overwhelming 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first ODI. Other than this match, Gill also performed well in previous matches this year. In 2022, he made first century and four 50s that were among the 638 runs he made from 12 innings for an average of 70.88 in ODI’s.
Gill’s playing quality shows that he has the ability to convert good starts into big scores. If to take it from different angle, the team may have some future plans with him. As, he has been picked over Ishan Kishan who smashed a double century in his last match .
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma comes in the list of most senior players of the team and the team must be finding a replacement of him after some time which could be none other than Shubhman Gill and giving him chances will improve his game and consistency. Ishan Kishan on other hand is already set for his game. So, this experiment could lead to form a good opening pair for the young Indian team in upcoming years.
