Marcel Sabitzer’s brace was enough for RB Leipzig to sink the previous year finalists, Tottenham Hotspurs and knock them out of the Round of 16 Champions League on the aggregate score of 4-0. RB Leipzig defeated the Lillywhites by a score of 3-0 at Red Bull Arena.

The visitors were without their strikers Harry Kane and the South Korean star  Son Heung Min and were toothless in the attack. The electric German side took a shot from a distance in the first 10 minutes and from then on, they never looked like they will budge.

In the 21st minute, RB Leipzig’s captain was then given far too much space to head home Angelino‘s cross at the near post. Emil Forsberg completed the formalities for the club in the 87th minute as he scored the third goal for the German outfit against Spurs.

Leipzig started in the amateur divisions, founded by Red Bull in 2009 by acquiring a fifth division licence, and only got promoted to the Bundesliga in 2016. In Europe’s premier club competition, Julian Nagelsmann’s side has now reached their first quarterfinal.

Struggling to keep up with Leipzig’s pace and were constantly exposed at the back while posing no threat upfront, injury-ravaged Tottenham, who were also missing winger Steven Bergwijn and full-back Ben Davies.

With Timo Werner and Patrik Schick coming close, Leipzig pounced on almost every sloppy pass and inaccurate clearance and could have added several more goals in a dominant first half.

Jose Mourinho, Spurs coach had warned the absence of “box sharks” Kane and Son would make it more difficult for his side to score and the Portuguese’s prediction proved accurate. The Portuguese tactician’s side had to wait until the 43rd minute in the first half of the second leg to carve out at least the half chance which they couldn’t carve it out. The first proper chance was observed in the second period where Dele Alli took a shot on goal in the 75th minute.

Tottenham must try to turn their Premier League season around if they are to have any chance of being back in the Champions League next term. Also, Tottenham will be up against Manchester United in the weekend clash who is on the song. Can the “Special One” turn it around for the North London club?
