Radamel Falcao a.k.a The Tiger is a Colombian professional footballer who plays forward for the Colombia national team and the Super League club Galatasaray. Radamel journey of becoming the best striker in the world begins with the Argentine club River Plate, for which he won the 2007-08 Clausura tournament. In 2009 he joined the club Porto and brought Europa League, Primeira Liga likewise trophies. Radamel during such time became the club’s all-time goal scorer in international club competitions through setting a record of netting the most number of goals (17) in the European campaign.

In the same year, he also became the first Colombian player to receive the Portuguese Golden Ball award. He was transferred to Atletico Madrid for a club record of 40 Million Euros. For the club, he brought Europa League and Super Cup in 2012. For his national team, he made his senior debut in 2007 and earned 89 caps and netted 34 goals. He represented his country at 2011, 2015 and 2019 Copa America and was also the part of the team that participated in the 2018 World Cup.

EARLY LIFE

Radamel was born on 10th February 1986 in Santa Marta, Colombia to Radamel Garcia and Carmeza Zarate. His father was a former footballer while her mother was a decent Housewife. Upon his birth, his father decided to name his little son after the name of ex-Brazilian Mid-fielder Paulo Alberto Falcao.

Falcao’s football training started at a very early stage. Just when he learned to crawl his dad brought him an original sized football to play. Growing up he became his dad’s mascot. Playing under his father’s he got the supervision and guidance much needed for his career start. At the age of 13 he debuted with the Colombian second-tier club Lanceros Boyaca. He spent two years thereafter which he moved to the Argentine club River Plate. At the club while seeing his gameplay and style his teammates gave him the nickname “El Tigre” (The Tiger).

PERSONAL LIFE

Falcao meets his wife Lorelei at a Christian Church in Argentina. At first, when Falcao asked Lorelei, she refused but Falcao asked her over and over again but she turned him down every time, until one day when she decided to give a chance, and their relationship started.  After a series of dating and knowing each other, both found love and happiness for each other. On 12th December 2017, they got married. The couple is blessed with two daughters Dominique and Desiree.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

After joining the River Plate, Falcao made his debut in their 8th division youth team. Playing for the team he netted a goal for the first time on 2nd October against the Independiente in a 3-1 win after gaining his confidence in the team under the management of Reinaldo Merlo. Unfortunately, Falcao due to severe injuries in the ligaments of his right knee, he remained out of the field for at least six long months. After his recovery, he made his first appearance in the 2006 Copa Sudamericana during the first-half session against the Atletico Paranaense in a 2-2 draw.

His performances in later time made Falcao the first choice for many clubs, River Plate was being offered by Milan, Aston Villa, and Fluminese but the club rejected all. In 2009 Falcao became the top scorer as a progressed striker with 43 goals. In July same year, he moved to Europe and joined the club Porto on 15th of the same month. Playing for the club he netted four goals in the Portuguese League, defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the UEFA Championship League, also made a winning score against Atletico Madrid in the Championship League.

In 2010 he scored two goals at the Taca de Portugal quarterfinals followed by a winning goal and his fourth goal in the UEFA Championship League tournament. In 2010-11 season he became the top goalscorer with seven goals during the UEFA Europa League, by the end of the Europa League Championship he netted a record of 17 goals in 14 games. Despite his extended contract with Porto, he was transferred to Atletico Madrid. He played his first match for the club on 11th April 2012, against the Real Madrid. In 2012-13 he netted a hat-trick in the UEFA Super Cup final and earned the title of being the top-scorer in the La Liga charts with seven goals. He also helped the team to defeat Real Madrid at the Copa del Rey. After a successful career in the Club, Falcao decided to join Monaco. In May 2013 Falcao signed a five-year contract with Monaco with a Ligue 1 promotion. In his debut season, his performances helped the club to earn the first place in the League table. He in total netted 7 goals in his debut season. On 3rd July 2015, he became the team’s caption.

He ended the season with Ligue 1 title with club’s 30 goals in 43 appearances. After playing for Manchester United and Chelsea on loan. On 2nd September 2019, he joined the Super Lig Club Galatasaray on a three-year contract fee for a five million fee. Falcao has been the part of his national team, as a part of the youth team, while playing Under 20 squad he brought South American Youth Championship. From the senior side, he has been part of the team competing for various international titles which include 2011, 2015 Copa America and 2018 World Cup.

CONTROVERSY

Falcao was accused by a Colombian television channel that he is two years older than his current age, the accusation was made upon the light of the documents which were of his primary school in which his birth date was filled as 1984, not 1986 as registered with FIFA. Later the controversial issue cooled down when Falcao’s original birth certificate was published by a Colombian Newspaper.
