IPL 2020 suspended indefinitely, confirms BCCI

No date has been finalised for the Indian Premier League‘s governing council meeting so far for the sponsorship rights, said the sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Monday.

The IPL’s GC was supposed to hold a meeting this week for reviewing the sponsorship rights, following the India-China violent face-off that took the lives of 20 Indian soldiers in the Eastern Ladakh.

The incident fumed the Indian fans as they took to boycotting Chinese products with IPL officials also changing their stride by announcing that on twitter.

“As of now, no date has been decided for the governing council meeting, BCCI is awaiting a report from the internal marketing team on overall financial aspects of IPL” confirmed by the sources in BCCI.

Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo is the current sponsor of the cash-rich league when they signed a five-year contract worth 2,199 crores with the BCCI in 2018. The sponsorship contract yields BCCI Rs. 440 crore every year from the Chinese mobile manufacturing giant.

The situation in the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has become intense between the Indian and the Chinese troops as the trend of boycotting the Chinese products is growing across the country.

BCCI had also released the tentative date of IPL from September 26 to November 8 this year but that would mostly depend on the future of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Earlier this month, BCCI had asserted of hosting the IPL behind closed doors if the situation demands as the Board of officials are working on all the possibilities to stage the IPL this year.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had also penned a letter to the affiliated members of BCCI, showing his intentions of going ahead with IPL.
