Napoli confirms ‘full confidence’ in under -fire coach Gattuso

Italian club Napoli has backed coach Gennaro Gattuso after report started circulating from last few days that he might be sacked due to slum in franchise form.

“President Aurelio De Laurentiis, with vice president Edoardo (De Laurentiis) and CEO Andrea Chiavelli, met the coaching staff tonight to confirm full confidence in the coach Rino Gattuso,” read a club statement on Wednesday.

Gattuso came in heavy criticism after suffering a defeat against Juventus by 2-0 in the Italian Super Cup followed by 3-1 loss at home against Hellas Verona in Serie A in the time frame of four days per week.

The 43-year-old was appointed in December 2019 to replace the sacked Carlo Ancelotti and led Napoli to a Coppa Italia triumph, the club’s first trophy in six years.

 But the most disappointing results came after the Serie A side lost by 2-1 at home against Spezia and manage to draw against struggling Torino, speculated that the club is looking to replace Gattuso with former boss Rafael Benitez.

Napoli will next lock horn against Spezia in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals on Thursday and the winner of the match will be facing Atalanta in the semfinal clash.

Taking about Napoli they are the top most club in Italian circuit. The club has clinched so far two league titles, six Coppa Italia titles, two SuperCoppa Italiana titles and one UEFA cup.

Their home ground is Stadio San Paolo with a capacity around 54,726.  In terms of attendance Napoli have fouth largest fanbase in Italy and were ranked as the fifth highest earning football club in Serie A with $182 million in revenue during 2017-18 season.  The club has long standing rivalry with Roma.
