Namibia clinch thrilling victory against Oman in first Super Over of T20 World Cup 2024
Namibia defeated Oman in a nail-biting encounter at the T20 World Cup 2024, with a dramatic Super Over finish. After a see-saw battle that saw both teams tied on 109 runs, David Wiese and Gerhard Erasmus emerged as Namibia’s heroes in the tense super-over drama.
Opting to field first, Namibia got off to a dream start as their pace spearhead Ruben Trumpelmann rattled Oman’s top order with two pinpoint yorkers in his very first over, dismissing openers Kashyap Prajapati and skipper Aqib Ilyas for ducks. The early jolts continued as Trumpelmann picked up his third wicket in his second over, removing the dangerous Naseem Khushi.

Despite the early carnage, Oman found stability with the experienced Zeeshan Maqsood anchoring the inning. He ensured Oman reached a run-a-ball during the powerplay overs. However, Bernard Scholtz provided another breakthrough for Namibia, dismissing Maqsood in the 7th over. Namibia’s spinners then tightened the bowling, restricting Oman’s scoring and preventing their lower order from scoring runs.
Namibia’s chase began on a shaky note as Bilal Khan dismissed Michael van Lingen for a golden duck in the second ball of the inning. Despite some resistance from Nikolaas Davin and Jan Frylinck, Oman’s spinners, particularly Aqib Ilyas, troubled the batsmen with his variations. Davin hits a six before falling prey to Ilyas’ bowling.
Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus tried to maintain the run rate alongside Frylinck, but the game turned into a tense battle with dropped catches and crucial wickets. A superb 18th over from Mehran Khan, conceding just four runs and dismissing JJ Smit, put Oman in a strong position.
Frylinck seemed to take control with some crucial boundaries, bringing Namibia back into contention. However, a sensational final over by Mehran Khan swung the momentum back towards Oman. He dismissed the set Frylinck and trapped Zane Green plumb in front, leaving Namibia needing two runs off the last ball.
With nerves jangling, Wiese, known for his big-hitting, couldn’t connect cleanly. However, a fumble by the wicket-keeper gifted Namibia a vital one-run, forcing the game into a dramatic Super Over.
