Muhammed Ashique Kuruniyan Biography
Muhammed Ashique Kuruniyan, an Indian professional football player who competes for the Indian national team and Indian Super League club Mohun Bagan Super Giant, was born on June 14, 1997. Ashique Kuruniyan plays as a winger for the Indian football team and Mohun Bagan football club.
Early Life and Youth Football Career
Kuruniyan was born in the city of Malappuram, in the state of Kerala, the sixth child of a shop-owning father and a housewife mother. When he was in the eighth grade, Kuruniyan stopped attending school and started working in his father’s sugarcane business to support his family. Ashique Kuruniyan used to play football in the fields after work in the evening. Ashique Kuruniyan was quickly chosen by the Kerala Football Association’s Vision India program, and he remained with the academy until the year 2014 when he transferred to Pune’s academy, which was then in the I-League. Ashique Kuruniyan was a key factor in Pune’s 2014–15 I-League U19 season runner-up finish.
When Pune City Football Club acquired the academy of Pune FC in the year 2016, they renamed the group Pune City Academy, and Kuruniyan joined. Kuruniyan was revealed to be joining Villarreal C, the third level of La Liga club Villarreal, on loan from Pune City in the month of October of the year 2016. Kuruniyan spent four months training in Spain, but in the month of February of the year 2017, Ashique Kuruniyan returned to India due to a hamstring injury.
Football Club Career
In the month of July of the year 2017, Kuruniyan signed a professional contract with Pune City Football Club, and he made his debut on 10 December of the year 2017 in their match against Jamshedpur Football Club. Ashique Kuruniyan scored his first professional goal on 30 December, scoring the first goal in the eighth minute of a 5–0 victory against NorthEast United Football Club.
Kuruniyan played his first match of the 2018–19 ISL season on 3 October 2021, scoring his first goal against Chennaiyin Football Club on 6 November. Ashique Kuruniyan scored his second goal of the season and final goal for Pune City Football Club in the match against Jamshedpur Football Club on 16 February of the year 2019, winning the match on a large margin of 1–4. After the 2018–19 season, FC Pune City was disbanded, and Kuruniyan signed for Bengaluru Football Club in the month of August of the year 2019.
In the month of August of the year 2019, the Bengaluru Football Club secured Kuruniyan under a four-year contract. Ashique Kuruniyan played his debut against NorthEast United Football Club on 21 October of the year 2019, which ended in a 0–0 tie. The Football Club of Bengaluru qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament and faced the ISL club ATK on both legs. Kuruniyan scored his debut goal for Bengaluru Football Club in the second leg of the semi-final on 8 March of the year 2020, which they lost 3–1.
Kuruniyan began his 2020–21 Indian Super League season in a match against Goa on 22 November of the year 2020, which ended in a dramatic 2–2 draw after a late FC Goa surge. Ashique Kuruniyan suffered a multiple fracture in his face during a match against Odisha FC on 17 December and returned to the pitch with a facemask in the match against Mumbai City Football Club on 15 February of the year 2021.
Kuruniyan played his first match of the 2021–22 Indian Super League season against NorthEast United Football Club on 20 November of the year 2021, which they won 4–2. Ashique Kuruniyan scored his first goal of the season against Kerala Blasters Football Club on 28 November, and another own goal on 11 December in Bengaluru’s 2–1 defeat over Goa Football Club.
Kuruniyan moved to ATK Mohun Bagan in the year 2022 and made his debut on 20 August against Rajasthan United Football Club at the 131st edition of the Durand Cup.
International Football Career
Kuruniyan, a former India under-18 and under-19 player, made his senior national team debut in the 2018 Intercontinental Cup. Muhammed Ashique Kuruniyan made his football debut in the opening match against Chinese Taipei, a 5–0 victory for India. Muhammed Ashique Kuruniyan also played in the final match against the football team of Kenya, winning the first edition of the Intercontinental Cup and helping Kuruniyan win his first international title. Kuruniyan was part of the Indian squad for the 2018 SAFF Championship, scoring his debut goal against the football team of Sri Lanka in the first match.
