Mateo Kovacic pens down a 4-year deal with Manchester City worth €30M, set to be City’s new number 8
Just a day after Manchester City announced the departure of their treble winning captain Ilkay Gundogan as a free agent, the club wasted no time to bring in his replacement. The Premier League champions have signed Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea on a 4-year deal after paying out his release clause.
The 29-year-old has come in as a direct replacement for the departing German midfielder. Mateo Kovacic is all set to be City’s new number 8 and people at the blue half of Manchester will be hoping he can replicate what Gundogan did during his 7-year stay at the Etihad.

Manchester City made a formal announcement only yesterday after completing all the required procedures. The deal had materialized last week itself and Kovacic also completed his medical before City revealed him as the club’s new singing.
Mateo Kovacic is City’s first signing in this summer transfer window and the Croatian midfielder will bring in a wealth of experience into the already magnificent City midfield. The 29-year-old has won 17 career trophies in total in his club career and has tasted massive success wherever he has gone.

He won 4 major trophies with Chelsea which includes the UCL, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World. He is among those few players who have won the UCL title 4 times in their career. Kovacic was a part of the Real Madrid team that won 3 consecutive UEFA Champions Leagues in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
With Madrid, Mateo Kovacic also won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World cup twice and also lifted La Liga and Supercopa De Espana once each.
Mateo Kovacic could well be the perfect fit for Manchester City
The 29-year-old is a versatile midfielder who can play in multiple positions at the middle of the park. Kovacic can operate as an attacking midfielder and also as a Holding midfielder. His profile is something that Pep Guardiola will appreciate a lot as the Spaniard likes to have versatile players in the team.
Just as we saw the transformation of John Stones from a Center back to a Midfielder, Mateo Kovacic’s past record suggests that he is already in for a transformation of his own.
