Manchester City and Gen.G, a renowned esports organization, have announced a new collaboration. Gen.G, established in 2017, boasts nine top-tier esports teams competing in popular titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, and Overwatch.
Gen.G has an impressive track record, having secured multiple global championships, including two wins at the prestigious League of Legends World Championship and the most recent League of Legends Champions Korea. Additionally, they lead in esports education with the Gen.G Global Academy (GGA), which focuses on nurturing the growth of the next generation of gaming talent.
This exciting collaboration aims to bring together the fan bases of football and esports, offering tailored experiences and unique engagement opportunities. It will involve the creation of new content featuring talent and players from both realms, accessible across multiple platforms. Furthermore, in-person fan events will be organized in South Korea.
Manchester City’s own esports division has experienced substantial growth in recent years. The club has formed successful professional teams in popular games like Fortnite and EA Sports FIFA, with a diverse roster of players from around the world. Notable members include ‘Shellzz,’ the ePremier League Champion for the 2020/21 season, and ‘Threats,’ the winner of DreamHack San Diego in 2023.
Following Manchester City’s recent announcement of their visit to Seoul as part of their preseason preparations in July 2023, this collaboration will further enhance the club’s presence in Asia. It presents an opportunity for both organizations to engage and activate fans as the team enters the new season as reigning Premier League Champions.
Gavin Johnson, Media Director at City Football Group, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that by combining the global audiences of both organizations, they can create thrilling experiences for football and esports fans alike.
Arnold Hur, CEO of Gen.G Esports, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing their desire to learn from the best in the sports world and maintain a championship mindset, even in highly competitive environments. He looks forward to working with Manchester City, the newly crowned champions, under the banner of GEN CITY. Hur also expressed his excitement about the partnership’s potential for both competitive and educational teams, aiming to build upon this collaboration in the future.
