Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United crashed out of the UEFA Europa League last night after a suffering a tough 3-0 loss away to Sevilla at the Sanchez Ramon Pizjuan. The Red Devils were hoping for more glory this season after ending their 5 year old trophy drought by defeating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
For the first time in almost a year, United looked like a changed side which is full of confidence and had clarity of what they are pursuing. However, the last few week have been tough for Ten Hag’ side especially under European lights. Before traveling to Spain, United had played out an unfortunate 2-2 draw against the Seville based outfit.
On Loan midfielder from Bayern Munich, Marcel Sabitzer had found the back of the net twice in the first half before United’s 2 vital Center-backs (Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez) got injured and replacements Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire scored 2 own goals.
Following the loss, reports have been lingering around Europe about the Man United management contemplating about firing the contracts of 12 star players in the team.
Without any doubts Maguire and De Gea are in the list as both of them have failed to live up to the expectations.
De Gea and Maguire both contributed to Sevilla’s first goal, while the former also being at fault for the third after scurrying off his line and handling the ball carelessly. Ten Hag is looking for a custodian with the ability to play ball out from the back using his legs, which De Gea appears to be ill-suited for as evidenced by his sloppy performance in Spain.
Midfielders Fred and Scott McTominay are also in line to get axed. Fringe signings like Anthony Elanga, Donny Van De Beek, Brandon Williams, Eric Bailly, Alex Telles, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer might have to find a new club later this summer.
