The first skeet shooter to qualify for Olympics, Mairaj Ahmad Khan, has struggled against many odds. He has his Olympic debut at the age of 40. Achievements have not followed the shooter, instead, he had to hard work & run towards it. But all his determination came back to him in the form of a silver medal at the ISSF World Cup.

EARLY LIFE

Olympian Miraj Ahmed Khan is a shooter from India who specializes in shotgun skeet event. He also achieved Olympic quota in the Shotgun skeet discipline in 2015 and became the first Indian shooter to qualify in the particular event. In 2016, Mairaj earned a silver medal at ISSF World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. He is the first & the only Indian athlete to hold both World Cup and Olympic title for India by achieving a silver medal at the ISSF World Cup 2016. He is also the person from India who participated in the SK125 event during the Rio Olympics Games. He was ranked at 10th position in the world & 6thy in Asia. Mairaj Ahmad Khan was an international shooter for 15 years. He has participated and won numerous events including Asian Championship, Commonwealth Shooting Championship, National & International Championships, and South Asian Federation.

PERSONAL LIFE

Mairaj Ahmed Khan was born on 02 November 1975 in Khurja, Bulandshahar district to a Muslim Sunni family. His father Mr. Ilyas Ahmed and mother, Mrs. Farrukh have always supported him to build his athlete career. Mairaj started his shooting training in 1998 after his uncle introduced it to him. Gradually, he took the sports seriously and decided to become a professional shooter. Najam Ahmed Khan, Mairaj’s brother, is also a shooter but he works in his family business as he is more into business than shooting. The shooter also has two more siblings namely, Farheen Ilyas Khan and Siraj Ahmed Khan. As an athlete, he always wished to provide the best training for aspiring shooters in India. MAK Shooting Foundation was started to provide world-class shooting training for the upcoming talents. An autobiography named HARD TARGET has been published on him.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

The shooter’s father was a state-level trap shooter due to which Mairaj grew up with guns. At the age of 24, he took up shooting as a career. His shooting career rose through the positions, numerous national championships achievements, a gold medal in team skeet event at Commonwealth Games 2010 and another gold at the Asian Shotgun Championship 2011. His debut in the Olympics 2012 failed as he got distracted by the case that was booked against him.

CONTROVERSY

During his World Cup qualification in Doha, he was accused of poaching in his home state. But when he got back home the cases were dismissed due to lack of evidence. Although he got out of the case but the shooter lost in the World Cup qualification due to distraction.
