Let’s talk about ecosystem of Esports in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka’s  financial situation is in doldrums with people protesting on the road against current Prime Minister Gotbaya Rajpaksha for not taking proper steps to control financial crisis in the island nation.

 Their tourism, sport, price of different commodity has been affected badly in the country only ray of hope is involvement of some of the Sri Lankan players including the likes of  – Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Bhanuka Rajpaskha in the ongoing cash rich league.

The other positive news coming from South Asian country is in reference to Esports which is recognized as the official sport in the country in 2019.

Sri Lanka Esports Association (SLESA) is responsible for taking care of operations of video games in the country with many International Esports events in the pipeline for the year 2022 keeping that in mind they will be launching the competition “Sri Lanka Esports Nationals 2022” which will be focussed on selection trails where Esports athletes will be picked to represent Sri Lanka at International Esports events. The selection trail is sponsored by Dialog who is also the main sponsor of SLESA.

The selection trails will consist of different games-  PUBG Mobile, FIFA 21 (PC), Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter Strike Global Offensive, Mobile Legends, Rocket League, eFootball PES 21, Street Fighter V (PC) and Tekken 7 (PC) as well as titles such as Arena of Valor, Hearthstone and Dream Three Kingdoms 2.

The players who will finish at top 3 in different games will be given a chance in the national squad.

“Esports has been identified as the fastest growing sport in Sri Lanka and the Esports Nationals provides the perfect opportunity for the next generation of Esports athletes to step up,” said Ramesh Liyanage, Secretary of SLESA.

Taking about the best players from Sri Lanka include names like- Ixmmxl, hikka, indrn and Ben and others who have made the country proud on numerous occasions in different Esports event.
