Kohli fumes at Jadeja’s unfair run-out decision after loss in first ODI against WI

Indian skipper Virat Kohli did not hide his displeasure on Sunday as he lashed out at the umpires for the controversial run-out of Ravindra Jadeja in the first ODI against West Indies at Chennai.

The incident took place in the 48th over when the Indian all-rounder went for a single and the fielder threw the ball directly at the stumps to run out Jadeja. The on-field umpire Shaun George did not rule the Indian out and did not refer it to the TV umpire either. The replays were then shown on the big screen, following which the West Indian players appealed, and the on-field umpires made a late referral to the third umpire. Jadeja was subsequently ruled out.

However, the fact that the West Indian players appealed after the highlights were shown, is what angered Kohli.

“The thought is simple, the fielder asked ‘how is that’ and the umpire said ‘not out’. The dismissal ends there. The people sitting on the TV outside cannot tell the fielders to then tell the umpire to review it again. I’ve never seen that happen in cricket,” said Kohli following India’s eight-wicket loss.

“I don’t know where the rules are, where the line is drawn. I think the referee and the umpires have to take that up, see that incident again. And figure out what needs to be done in cricket. People sitting outside can’t dictate what happens on the field. I think that’s exactly what happened there,” he added.

During the incident, Virat Kohli was clearly miffed as he had risen from his seat in the dressing room and marched on to have a word with the fourth umpire Anil Choudhary.

On his part, Keiron Pollard, the Windies skipper, said, “For me at the end of the day, the right decision was made, which is important. We appealed and the umpire didn’t take it at that time, but eventually, the right decision was made.”

India was beaten in the first game as its rivals chased down 288 with eight wickets to spare. The second ODI will be played in Vizag on December 18.
