Karthik Palaniapan Meiyappan, a right-arm leg spin bowler for the United Arab Emirates national cricket team, was born in India on October 8, 2000. He participated in the UAE’s representation at the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and made his One Day International (ODI) debut for the UAE in 2019. Meiyappan made history by becoming the first player from the United Arab Emirates to ever take a hat trick, the first player from the UAE to ever take a hat trick in a T20 World Cup, and the first player to ever take a hat trick from an ICC associate member against an ICC full member.
Playing Career
The United Arab Emirates national under-19 cricket team was captained by Karthik Meiyappan in the 2019 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Meiyappan also competed in the 2018 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Bangladesh..
Karthik Meiyappan was chosen in December to play for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Tri-Nation Series ODI team in 2019. Meiyappan participated in his debut One Day International for the United Arab Emirates against the United States on December 8, 2019. He was selected for the United Arab Emirates team for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup later the same month. Karthik Meiyappan was one of those 10 cricketers who received a one-year, part-time contract from the Emirates Cricket Board in December 2020.
Meiyappan was selected for the UAE Twenty20 International (T20I) team in October 2021 in preparation for the 2021 Summer T20 Bash competition. On October 8, 2021, he played in his first T20I match for the UAE against Ireland.
He was selected for the UAE team to compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022. He took a hat-trick after ejecting Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka in his team’s second game of the group stage of the competition against Sri Lanka. It was also the sixth hat trick at a T20 World Cup and the first time an ICC associate member player had taken three wickets against an ICC full member. This was a UAE player’s maiden T20I hat trick.
Personal Life
Chennai, India is where Meiyappan was born. Before his family officially relocated to Dubai in 2012, he was raised in Chennai, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. He attended The Winchester School in Jebel Ali with Aryan Lakra, another member of the UAE team.
