IPL 2023: The Role of Technology in Umpiring and Decision Making
The system of umpiring and decision-making has changed a lot with technology. We have seen technologies like DRS, Hot Spot, Snico, and Hawkeye being used in IPL.
Today is the era of IPL, and umpiring has a significant role in every match. With technology, the system of umpiring and decision-making has changed significantly. Today’s article will look at technology’s changes in umpiring and decision-making in IPL.
DRS
DRS, i.e., Decision Review System. This system matches, such as IPL, World Cup, and international matches. Umpire has full authority to use the DRS method when the umpire finds it necessary to examine a close call, or the players from both sides can challenge the umpire’s decision and make a call for DRS.
Every team received gets two or three reviews in each match. If the umpire’s decision isn’t satisfactory, players can use the DRS system and overturn the umpire’s decision if the decision is proved wrong.
Hot Spot technology
Technologies like Hot Spot and Snico are also used. In Hot Spot Technology, the camera captures the contact between the batsman and the ball. It shows whether the ball has touched the batsman’s bat or not.
Snicko technology
In Snicko technology, the sound is used. When the ball touches the batsman’s bat, a sound is generated. It shows whether the ball has touched the batsman’s bat or not.
Hawkeye technology
Another technology used in IPL for umpiring and decision-making is Hawkeye. Hawkeye is mainly used for LBW decisions. 3rd umpire uses this technology to see how high the ball is passing and whether the ball is going near the stumps. This technology helps to decide whether the player is LBW or not.
With all the technology, the system of umpiring and decision-making in IPL has evolved and improved as new technologies occur.
Technology has led to confidence in the game has been strengthened among the players and the fans. But, along with technology, we must also have faith in our game and umpiring decisions. Sometimes, even the technique needs to be corrected. We should support our players and umpires as well.
