IPL 2023 : Nitish Rana fined 24 Lakhs for slow over rate during KKR’s win over CSK last night!

Kolkata Knight Riders provided themselves a glimmer of hope to make it to the play-offs of IPL 2023 with an emphatic victory against 2nd placed Chennai Super Kings. It was match number 61 and a reverse fixture of the 2 teams and it was also CSK’s final home game of the season.

Although it did not end the way CSK would have expected and now they only have one match to play against Delhi Capitals, which is also their only chance to secure play-offs spots. CSK had won the toss and elected to bat first but they did not have a great time with the bat as KKR restricted them to 144 with Shivam Dubey scoring the most runs for the team with his 48 off 34 balls.

During the 1st innings, KKR Captain Nitish Rana was apparently maintaining a slow over rate which goes directly against IPL’s Code of Conduct. An official statement read – “As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Rana has been fined Rs. 24 lakh and each member of the Playing XI, including the impact substitute, is fined Rs. 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee, whichever is lesser.”

In the second innings, KKR did not get off to the best of starts as they were down to 33/3 within the just the 5th over. However, Captain Nitish Rana and Middle-order batter Rinku Singh steadied KKR’s innings as they stood for a partnership of 99 before Rinku Singh got out.

In the end, the 2-time champions comfortably chased down the total by 18.3 overs, moving to the 7th spot with 12 points. Realistically they have very narrow chances of finishing in the Top 4 as RCB, RR and PBKS all have 12 points to their names.

With only a game in hand, KKR will have to register a big margin victory when they welcome Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens.
