England players who were flopped in IPL
The Indian Premier League has been an asset that has given huge exposure to players domestically or internationally. There have been players who made a lasting impression at IPL which helped them get their maiden call at the national team. Speaking of overseas players, despite the restriction of only 4 players in the playing XI, there have been players who had utilized the opportunities to their fullest.
However, there have been players, who failed to leave a mark. When it comes to English players, not many players from England have been a part of the Indian Premier League. Few did play outstandingly while some didn’t really make the most of the opportunity. Here we list down some of the English players that didn’t perform up to the expectations.
Chris Jordan
Chris Jordan was roped in as a replacement for the fiery Mitchell Starc by the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in the 2016 season of the Indian Premier League. In his first IPL campaign, he played 9 matches with an economy of over 9 runs per over while scalping only 11 wickets to his name.
This led the RCB management to release him ahead of the 2017 season and the Hyderabad franchise bought him for his base price. However, he featured only once, and in the recent auctions, he went unsold due to his poor stint in the previous two editions.
Tymal Mills
Tymal Mills was bought for a whopping amount of 12crores by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was a part of the season when RCB had hit the bottom of the table. Before the auctions, Mills was considered as a star bowler and with the Bangalore franchise discontinuing their campaign with Mitchell Starc, they were eyeing out for a decent replacement. Tymal Mills turned out to be the second-most expensive player who was purchased at the auctions.
The 25-year-old Mills Featured in 5 matches for the RCB and was highly ineffective. His bowling economy rose to 9 runs per over and scalped only 9 wickets which led Bangalore to release him.
This made a bad impression as Mills failed to attract any other team for purchase at the auctions despite his base price at 1 Crore courtesy of his failure to live up to the expectations of the cash-rich league.
Luke Wright
Englishman Luke Wright is very popular as a T20 specialist and is roped in by almost any of the T20 franchise leagues in the cricketing world. However, in the IPL, Wright has merely played 7 matches and his not-so-impressive performances in those games have resulted negatively for him.
Wright was replaced by the injured Tim Paine in the 2012 edition for the Pune Warriors India. And over a period of 2 IPL seasons, he managed to represent the team for only 7 games. He scored a total of 106 runs in 6 outings and didn’t really have sparked in the bowling department as well. His economy surged over 10 runs per over and scalped only 2 wickets.
Due to the aforementioned poor performances in the Indian Premier League, Wright went unsold in the later auctions post-2013.
Sam Billings
The English right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman has been trading twice in the IPL representing the Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings. The 23-year-old represented Delhi Daredevils (now, Delhi Capitals) in the previous two seasons of the IPL, and out of the 11 games he represented, Billings managed to pile a handful of runs. His total IPL tally is at merely 226 runs with an Indian Premier League career average of 22.6.
Sam Billings who is also the skipper for team Kent in England’s County cricket is a decent, well-established player in the T20 world. Previously he has impressed and played well for Islamabad United, Sydney Sixers but when it comes to IPL, Billings has failed to leave a lasting impression.
